The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNC Pembroke) invites applications for its next General Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal, Audit, Risk, and Compliance (General Counsel), a strategic, collaborative, and approachable leader who will serve as the university’s chief legal officer. Reporting directly to Chancellor Robin G. Cummings, the General Counsel will provide trusted legal guidance, advance institutional priorities, and partner with senior leadership to foster a strong culture of compliance and integrity across the university. UNC Pembroke is a purpose-driven university with a proud history and a bold future. Founded in 1887 to serve American Indian students, UNC Pembroke now welcomes a growing community from across the region and around the world. The General Counsel and Vice Chancellor will play a pivotal role in guiding the university through a dynamic period of growth and transformation. This position will collaborate with various offices, both on and off campus, in areas including contract law, bidding and purchasing regulations, employment law, civil rights of students and employees, copyright and intellectual property rights, immigration law, and laws and regulations affecting academic research. The next General Counsel and Vice Chancellor will have at least seven (7) years of progressively relevant legal experience, including experience in higher education or a similarly complex organization. Holding a Juris Doctor (JD) or LLB Degree from an accredited law school, the General Counsel will have admission to the state bar, or the eligibility to practice law in the State of North Carolina. This is a full-time position that will be performed on-site in North Carolina. Compensation will be commensurate with experience, including a competitive base salary and a competitive benefits package.
