The San Francisco Recreation & Park Department is accepting applications for the Apprentice Gardener (3410) for Spring 2026. ONE WEEK FILING ONLY. Applicants are encouraged to apply immediately. Application Deadline: October 15, 2025 at 5:00 pm; Verification Deadline: October 17, 2025 at 5:00 pm. Compensation: $27.1750 per hour. Appointment Type: Permanent-Exempt (PEX). Pursuant to the City & County of San Francisco Charter, Section 10.104.13, exempt appointees are not subject to civil service procedures and serve at the pleasure of the appointing officer. Responsibilities

Participates in a structured on-the-job and classroom training program and learns routine and basic manual labor tasks. Waters lawns, planted areas and playfields, operates hand or power mower, and fertilizes lawns, shrubs and flower beds. Performs routine trimming and pruning of shrubs and hedges; gathers and disposes of cuttings. With close supervision, assists in pest control, plantings, renovations of lawns or play areas, and related tasks. Removes debris and litter; cleans play areas and pathways; loads debris for disposal. Rakes and weeding; cleans restrooms and auxiliary buildings as required. Maintains tools and equipment and performs general maintenance duties. Assists in responding to service requests generated by the public or other City agencies. Loads and unloads materials, supplies, and equipment safely. Assists in minor repairs and adjustments to landscape irrigation systems and equipment. Performs related duties as assigned. Qualifications

Meet admission and eligibility requirements for enrollment at City College of San Francisco as follows: 18 years of age on or before the first day of instruction, or; High school graduate, or an equivalent (GED or state high school proficiency), or; Complete a minimum of 120 high school credits with a permission/consent form. Possession of a valid California (Class C) driver's license. If selected for the program, participants must be registered with City College of San Francisco and enrolled in OH 50 Introduction to Environmental Horticulture. Space is limited; enroll and register as soon as possible. See City College of San Francisco for registration information. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Six (6) months (1,040 hours) of verifiable experience in care and maintenance of landscaped areas or related trades. A good driving record. Verifiable experience in a physically demanding position (e.g., gardening, labor, construction, etc.). Ability to safely lift and move large plants and equipment; ability to kneel, bend, and squat for extended periods. New or continuing student status at City College of San Francisco. WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to inclement weather and potentially hazardous conditions or materials. Some positions require safe driving of large vehicles and may require weekend or shift work.
