Overview

The Department of Mathematics at Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The start date is August 15, 2026, with a standard teaching load of six courses per year. A Ph.D. in Mathematics is required by August 1, 2026. Areas of interest include computational mathematics, statistics, or related fields, but other areas will be considered. The department is interested in candidates with experience or interest in teaching courses in applied statistics or related topics. The successful candidate must be able to teach the core mathematics curriculum and, as a plus, a 2‑course math sequence for Elementary Education majors. Candidates should be dedicated to excellent teaching in a liberal arts environment where undergraduate research is encouraged. There is an opportunity to participate in university-wide general education programs. An active research agenda is required for tenure at IWU. The mathematics program balances applied and pure mathematics. Existing faculty expertise includes graph theory and combinatorics, complexity theory, dynamical systems, differential equations, probability and statistics, survival analysis, computational statistics, fluid dynamics, and population dynamics, with an affiliated faculty member in algorithmic number theory. Tenure-track faculty at Illinois Wesleyan engage students through six teaching assignments each year, pursue scholarly or artistic work, serve as academic advisors, and participate in departmental and campus-wide service. After formative reviews in years two through four, a tenure and promotion case is prepared in the fall of the sixth year. Tenure-track faculty are eligible for sabbatical after six complete academic years of full-time service and every seven years thereafter. Professional development opportunities include possible start-up funds, junior faculty leave, and support for external grant development. The Thorpe Center for Curricular and Faculty Development supports teaching and scholarly work through mentoring, internal grants, and instructional design and technology assistance. About IWU
