Overview
The City of Friendswood is currently hiring a Crime Analyst with the Police Department. The Crime Analyst plays a critical role in supporting law enforcement operations by conducting advanced analytical work to identify crime trends, predict criminal activity, and provide actionable intelligence to enhance investigations and resource deployment. This position is integral to the effectiveness of the department's investigative, tactical, and strategic decision-making processes, directly influencing how detectives and officers respond to criminal activity. The analyst must collaborate with regional analysts throughout the Houston metropolitan area to share intelligence, track criminal patterns across jurisdictions, and contribute to interagency efforts in combating crime. The analyst may brief the Chief of Police and command staff on emerging crime trends, providing high-level analytical insights that shape departmental policies and proactive enforcement strategies. The role requires a high degree of independence, critical thinking, and technical expertise within established guidelines.
Responsibilities
Advanced Crime Analysis & Intelligence Gathering: Lead analytical projects and guide officers on utilizing crime data effectively. Support strategic decision-making by providing high-quality intelligence and risk assessments.
Identify patterns, trends, and linkages in crime data to generate actionable intelligence that enhances investigations and informs patrol strategies.
Conduct advanced statistical analysis to forecast criminal activity and assess the effectiveness of enforcement strategies.
Collects and analyzes structured and unstructured crime data from various sources, compiling reports and bulletins and disseminating information and assessments.
Responds to patrol officer and detective requests for information regarding crime and suspects.
Generates crime bulletins as needed.
Produces monthly and annual crime reviews.
Produces one-time or recurring police operations reports using Crystal Reports.
Provides data or reports to support budget requests, police administration, and city administration as needed.
Responds to external law enforcement agency requests.
Maintains accurate records and data within CAD and RMS.
Investigative & Tactical Support
Work directly with detectives and specialized units to provide investigative leads, link suspects to crimes, and assist with case development.
Generate real-time intelligence reports and suspect profiles to aid in active investigations.
Conduct in-depth network analysis to identify criminal associations, organized crime activity, and repeat offenders.
Import data to create various maps using the GIS crime mapping system.
Strategic & Operational Planning
Prepare detailed reports and presentations on crime trends, hot spots, and emerging threats for the Chief of Police, command staff, and field operations.
Contribute to the department's resource allocation strategy by advising on optimal deployment of patrol units based on crime forecasting.
Develop risk assessments and proactive policing recommendations to mitigate crime and enhance public safety.
Conduct research, mainly online, for new technologies and updates to state and federal laws that require updates to the police records system.
Regional Collaboration & Intelligence Sharing
Serve as a liaison to crime analysts across Houston-area law enforcement agencies, participating in regional intelligence meetings and task forces.
Ensure timely and accurate dissemination of intelligence related to regional crime patterns, emerging threats, and high-profile cases.
Work with state and federal partners on crime analysis initiatives, contributing to broader intelligence-sharing efforts.
Briefings & Leadership Support
Regularly brief the Chief of Police and other executive staff on crime trends, major investigations, and operational recommendations.
Develop and present intelligence reports to city officials, community stakeholders, and external agencies as needed.
Provide crime analysis expertise in support of department-wide strategic planning and policy development.
Professional Development & Continuous Improvement
Stay current on emerging crime analysis techniques, software advancements, and law enforcement strategies through professional development opportunities.
Identify opportunities to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the crime analysis function through technological and methodological innovations.
Requirements
At least two (2) years of experience in crime or intelligence analysis or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid Texas Driver License
Successful completion of a background investigation
Preferred
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice, Social Science, Statistics, Data Analytics, or a related field.
Certification by the International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) or the International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts (IALEIA).
This position may require 24-hour availability in emergency situations.
