Job Summary
The Academics Coach is responsible for leading, developing, and managing their assigned high school academics team within Interscholastic Academics area. This role includes planning practices, teaching fundamental skills, fostering teamwork, and promoting good sportsmanship. The Academics Coach/Judge will work closely with school administrators, student-athletes, and parents to create a positive, supportive environment that emphasizes personal growth, athletic development, and academic achievement.
Position Summary
Promotes athletic programs within the school and community, organizing events and awards programs to recognize achievements and encourage student participation
Attends all varsity competitions and coaches the varsity team
Plans and conduct daily practice sessions and game strategies that enhance student-athlete skills and encourage teamwork.
Conducts fair tryouts, assesses skill levels, and makes roster selections based on performance and team needs
Ensures the safety and well-being of all student-athletes during practices, competitions, and team-related activities by enforcing MCC, MPS, and WIAA safety guidelines
Collaborates with athletic directors, assistant coaches, and other school staff to coordinate schedules, facility use, transportation, and support resources
Maintains compliance with WIAA, MPS, and MCC policies regarding eligibility, sportsmanship, and conduct; verifies student-athlete eligibility and academic standing
Act as a liaison between the school, parents, and student athletes
Participates in coaching clinics, attends relevant meetings, and stays updated on best practices in coaching, training techniques, and WIAA regulations.
Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision Required Reports to the School Leader and Commissioner of Athletics and Academics
Job Requirements
Obtain permission from the school leader and complete the application
Complete and forward all employment hiring requirements prior to coaching/judging
Judges must have knowledge of all the rules and regulations they are judging. He/She reports directly to the Academics coach.
Judges complete all pay sheets and return to Academics coach for timely processing
Preferred Experience
2-3 years of experience coaching and/or judging
Familiarity with Academics specific association regulations, MPS policies, and the needs of student-athletes
Strong communication and engagement skills with experience organizing events, awards programs, or academics promotion activities
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of Academics rules and regulations (Forensics, Debate, and Chess)
Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, parents, coaches, and administrators
Knowledge of athletic safety protocols and ability to enforce safety policies and procedures
Ability to adapt to changing conditions, handle conflicts, and make quick decisions during tournaments and practices
Dedication to balancing academic and co-curricular activities
Ability to maintain professionalism, boundaries, and confidentiality in all interactions with students, parents, and colleagues
bACultural competence and sensitivity to diversity in students' backgrounds, experiences, and needs.
