The Staff Attorney (Unaccompanied Children Program) is responsible for providing direct legal representation to clients served by St Frances Cabrini Center for Legal Assistance in immigration matters. Legal representation includes entering an appearance as the attorney of record on matters and in proceedings before the USCIS, Asylum Office, State, federal and immigration courts, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, agencies within the Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, as well as appellate agencies such as the Administrative Appeals Office and Board of Immigration Appeals. The Staff Attorney also provides legal services in the form of community outreach and legal education, legal workshops, legal intake, legal research, individual legal representation as well as supervising caseworkers and/or law student interns. The Staff Attorney works under the direct supervision of Senior Attorney, Managing Attorney and/or Associate Legal Director. The Staff Attorney works as a team with the Legal Assistant/Paralegal and other Cabrini Center staff.
What you Deliver
Legal Assistance
Provide legal assistance and direct representation to immigrant clients before the USCIS, Asylum Office or Immigration Court on matters such as family petition, removal of conditional status, adjustment of status, naturalization, asylum, removal defense, and other immigration proceedings. Tasks include conducting legal intake and screening, interviewing clients, affiants, witnesses, experts, case managers, and others; drafting and preparing immigration petitions; conducting legal research; writing memoranda, motions, or briefs; and preparing clients for interviews and hearings.
Case Management
Maintain client files, case notes, correspondence, filings, and case statistics. Participate in case reviews and stay updated on immigration laws and policies.
Meetings
Attend and participate in team meetings, staff meetings, and other relevant gatherings. Engage with funder and community meetings as needed.
Contract and Agency Compliance
Ensure compliance with contract requirements, provide data and reports, and participate in required trainings and webinars.
Charla and Outreach
Participate in legal outreach sessions, present legal information, and engage in community education efforts in both Spanish and English.
Supervision
Supervise legal assistants, paralegals, and interns as assigned.
Other
Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors, including assisting with meetings, trainings, community partnerships, and events.
Qualifications Expertise
J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
Licensed by the Supreme Court of Texas or eligible to take the bar exam and obtain license within one year of employment
Bilingual in Spanish and English
Skills and Assets
Strong legal research and writing skills
Excellent communication and negotiation skills
Ability to manage a high-volume caseload and meet deadlines
Proficiency in MS Office and basic typing skills
Multicultural sensitivity and ability to handle confidential information
Experience working with low-income immigrant communities
