Overview
The Career Counselor provides personalized, high-touch career counseling and coaching to assigned Pathways. This role supports the development and implementation of the Advising and Career Services program model and collaborates with the Academic Advising team to help students complete their degree or certificate. The counselor guides students in setting goals, exploring career paths, and connecting with campus resources. This position helps plan, organize, and develop Career READY programming and outreach and facilitates engagement among students, alumni, employers, and community partners to support students in achieving their personal and professional goals.

Essential Job Functions Career Counseling
Provides career counseling to help students clarify educational goals and select careers, including guidance on academic majors and career pathways. Assists current students and recent alumni in identifying careers that match their personality, values, and skills, and helps them develop educational and career goals.
Offers individual and group career counseling on resumes, cover letters, interviewing, and other professional skills. Conducts career counseling and test interpretations for individuals and small groups.
Develops deep understanding of the Career Services CSM tool (e.g., Handshake) to assist students and staff with questions, regularly sharing dashboard data with key stakeholders. Leads assigned career development programs or outreach efforts. Uses assessment tools for data collection and resource development.
Provides career consultation and referral services with community partners as needed. Develops approaches for underrepresented student populations including but not limited to minority students, non-traditional students, first generation, veterans, and returning students.
Contributes to the identification, analysis, and assessment of student success outcomes. Connects students with employers, job and internship opportunities (on and off campus), networking, and professional organizations related to their academic pathway.
Maintains accurate student records for reporting while keeping sensitive information confidential. Explains College policies and degree requirements and how to be a successful student. Interprets career, personality, and other assessments.
Training & Educational Resource Development
Develops and conducts Career READY workshops grounded in the eight career competencies described by NACE. Topics include career exploration, decision-making, goal setting, job searching, labor market data and research, campus and community resources, networking, branding, and related topics in various formats.
Delivers career-related classroom presentations, group/club presentations, and other sessions as requested. Trains new students and new employees in Career Services.
Program Coordination
Contributes to communication plans and marketing by engaging with students, faculty, and advisors. Promotes career services, workshops, and programming to increase awareness and participation.
Develops, implements, and monitors program plans, objectives, and timelines to align with the department’s mission and goals. Partners with faculty and staff to coordinate programming and training. Gathers feedback from participants and stakeholders to refine offerings.
Relationship Building
Collaborates with faculty, administrators, and college departments to meet student career planning needs. Builds and maintains relationships with community partners to create referrals for students.
Maintains professional relationships with community contacts to support referrals, collaborations, recruitment, and placement activities. May oversee special programs and retention projects.
Administrative
Provides up-to-date data and tracking for programs; uses data analytics via platforms such as Starfish, Workday, and Handshake. Tracks student participation and outcomes.
Generates frequent reports and data on participation and needs. Uses technology effectively for tracking and reporting.
Culture of Respect
Fosters a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and community members.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Counseling, College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or a closely related field
One (1) year of progressively responsible experience working with diverse socioeconomic groups and adult learners
State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to access work sites
Preferred Qualifications
Marketing, Outreach, and Project Management skills preferred
An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework, and experience may qualify a candidate.
