Overview Northwest Justice Project (NJP) is a not-for-profit statewide law firm that pursues its mission of Combating Injustice • Strengthening Communities • Protecting Human Dignity. NJP secures justice for people in or near poverty through high quality legal advocacy that promotes the long-term well-being of low-income individuals, families, and communities through legal representation, community partnerships, education, and other advocacy.

NJP seeks applications from qualified attorneys committed to supporting our mission in southwest Washington. This is a regular full-time position covered by NJP’s collective bargaining agreement. This position is funded for up to one year from the start date, or until December 31, 2026, whichever comes first.

Position details The Staff Attorney will work out of NJP’s Olympia office and will primarily serve Thurston, Mason, and Lewis counties although coverage may be required in surrounding areas or statewide (through remote appearances or travel if necessary).

The primary area of practice is housing, including work with our fast-paced, appointed counsel eviction defense program and with the field office team.

Commitment to equity and community engagement NJP is especially interested in qualified candidates with professional, personal and/or service experience that allows them to contribute to and support the legal aid community’s commitment to race equity. Candidates must be willing to be engaged with the community to be served. Some level of in-person attendance will be required but hybrid in-person/remote work plans may be available in compliance with NJP’s telecommuting policy.

Responsibilities

Engage in housing-related legal work, including work with the eviction defense program and field office team.

Provide legal representation and advocacy for clients in applicable housing matters.

Collaborate with colleagues, partners, and community stakeholders to advance NJP’s mission.

Qualifications

Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and admission to or eligibility for admission to the bar in the relevant jurisdiction.

Commitment to serving low-income individuals and communities; alignment with race equity goals is preferred.

Willingness to engage with the community served; ability to work in-person as required and adapt to hybrid/remote arrangements in line with policy.

Compensation and benefits Starting salary is based upon years of experience, with an annual salary range of $83,548 to $146,692. We offer a comprehensive benefits package which includes 100% paid employee health premiums and significant premium shares for family health premiums, as well as generous time off.
