Overview
Traveling Superintendent – Commercial Construction. Locations: Iowa City, IA; Minneapolis, MN; Kansas City, MO; Omaha, NE. Travel: 100% Travel – Projects across the Midwest and U.S. Full-Time.
The Traveling Superintendent (Superintendent 3) will oversee all aspects of field operations on moderately complex commercial construction projects across the U.S., with a base office in Kansas City or another Midwest location. The position requires full-time travel for extended durations, often years at a time, to project locations based on business needs. The Superintendent is responsible for project execution, safety, scheduling, subcontractor management, and site logistics to ensure successful and profitable project completion, while promoting the culture and values.
Responsibilities
Project Leadership: Manage all phases of construction on mid-sized to large-scale projects; serve as the primary on-site leader and liaison to clients, architects, engineers, and subcontractors; direct daily field operations and coordinate all site activities; lead daily stand-ups and weekly trade partner meetings.
Safety & Quality Control: Champion JE Dunn's safety culture; investigate incidents and lead retraining as needed; ensure on-site adherence to project specifications and company quality standards; supervise pre-punch activities and project closeout with stakeholders.
Project Controls & Scheduling: Develop and adjust construction schedules in collaboration with the Project Manager; manage and document daily reports, site logs, and cost tracking reports; coordinate materials, equipment, and labor in alignment with project phases.
Team & Subcontractor Management: Supervise company field staff, subcontractors, and suppliers across project lifecycle; approve timecards, manage labor cost coding, and ensure effective staffing plans; participate in subcontractor buyout meetings and field planning sessions.
Client Engagement & Business Development: Represent JE Dunn professionally at all times and maintain client relationships; participate in marketing presentations, project pursuits, and preconstruction planning; identify and develop new business opportunities through client engagement.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Based out of Kansas City or a JE Dunn Midwest office (Iowa City, Omaha, Des Moines, or Minneapolis).
Willing to travel 100% for extended project durations, often across multiple states.
Demonstrated ability to lead complex commercial projects $50M+ in value.
Effective communicator with strong leadership and problem-solving abilities.
Education
High School Diploma or GED (Required)
Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (Preferred)
Experience
8+ years of commercial construction experience
5+ years in a field supervision role
Experience implementing Lean construction principles
Proven track record of success on large-scale or multi-site commercial projects ($50M+)
Technical Proficiencies
MS Office Suite (Intermediate)
Project Management & Accounting Software (e.g., Procore, CMiC) (Intermediate)
Scheduling Software (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project) (Intermediate)
JE Dunn internal construction technologies (Preferred)
Key Skills & Abilities
Strong understanding of construction sequencing and means & methods
Proficiency in subcontractor coordination, layout, rigging, and equipment planning
Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and align diverse teams
Excellent communication, documentation, and leadership skills
Advanced knowledge of safety standards, quality control, and labor productivity
Working Conditions
Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
Will be exposed to extreme weather conditions and active construction sites
Must be available for non-traditional work hours (nights/weekends, as needed)
Frequent: Standing, walking, climbing, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling
Occasional: Sitting, viewing computer screen
