RN Clinical - Oncology Services - Per Diem 8 Hour Days (Non-Exempt) (Union) — Keck Medicine of USC, Hospital, Los Angeles, California.
As an integral part of the interdisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process to provide therapeutic care to patients. The RN is accountable for the coordination of patient care and education to the patient and family in accordance with the standards, policies, and practices in a compassionate, supportive, and therapeutic environment. In the outpatient setting, the RN provides therapeutic care to patients and their families as part of the multidisciplinary team.
Essential Duties
Follows policies and procedures and demonstrates ability to access online manuals and references
Translates learned scientific knowledge into practical application in applying the nursing process
ASSESSMENT: Appropriately completes nursing assessment and screening upon patient arrival at each appointment
DIAGNOSIS: Interprets assessment information and formulates nursing diagnoses
PLAN: Maintains problem list, medication list and allergies list
INTERVENTION: Administers medications as ordered and completes re-assessments as indicated; completes patient care procedures correctly per policy; delegates tasks based on others\' scope of practice and competency; acts as patient advocate
DOCUMENTATION: Ensures documentation is complete and correct on all encounters; includes assessment and screening at each appointment; ensures consents signed for all invasive procedures; maintains current medication list
EDUCATION: Provides patient and family education as needed based on diagnosis or treatment plan
EQUIPMENT: Maintains BP machine, bladder scanner, EKG machine, Steris and supporting logs, oxygen pulse oximeter; correctly identifies and notifies appropriate department about defective equipment
COMMUNICATION: Communicates effectively with all members of the healthcare team, patient, and family; includes SBAR, clinic-to-floor reporting for urgent situations, and appropriate patient/family interactions
ORGANIZATION: Manages time effectively; prioritizes responsibilities; takes meal breaks without incurring overtime
OBSERVES REGULATORY AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: National Patient Safety Goals; uses two patient identifiers; does not use unapproved abbreviations; uses procedural time outs; ensures medication reconciliation; maintains audible alarms
HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT: Biohazard, Medication, Sharps, Chemotherapy
HIPAA/OSHA requirements (e.g., no food or drink in clinical areas); JCAHO readiness; critical values are communicated and documented; maintains a safe work environment
QUALITY MEASURES: Identifies and participates in data collection and process improvements
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Participates in professional hospital/nursing activities; relief charge nurse; nursing committees/councils; journal club; educational workshops; ONS membership; assist in developing/updating patient education materials
Accepts and completes additional duties as assigned
Bonus Points: Professional certification or other qualifications as applicable
Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
BSN required (RN). Grandfathered from BSN if hired prior to 12/2019
Minimum 6 months experience working in oncology as a registered nurse
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak, read and write English proficiently
Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions; ability to follow and perform duties including whole blood collection and apheresis procedures in accordance with policies and procedures
Committed to excellence in patient care and customer service
Ability to work independently with minimal direction and supervision
Preferred Qualifications
Ambulatory and/or oncology experience preferred
Oncology specialty certification preferred (e.g., OCN)
Required Licenses/Certifications
Registered Nurse (RN) – CA Board of Registered Nursing
Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider – American Heart Association
Fire Life Safety Training (LA City); if no card, obtain within 30 days of hire and maintain
Chemotherapy Certification: Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Card within 6 months of hire
