With a workforce of approximately 4,500 employees throughout the state, the Department is dedicated to A Safer Florida through the efficient and professional execution of its core mission: the issuance of driver licenses, vehicle tags and titles, and operation of the Florida Highway Patrol. Responsibilities
This position serves as a Troop Legal Advisor to a Troop within the Florida Highway Patrol and as Assistant General Counsel to FLHSMV. It provides legal advice and training to FHP members. Key duties include handling prosecution of traffic infraction hearings, civil asset forfeitures, monitoring claims litigation, and other administrative hearings as needed. The role requires the ability to communicate effectively with non-lawyers, work in a courtroom setting, and think on one's feet. It involves training responsibilities, travel (overnight), and developing relationships with law enforcement personnel, local state attorneys, sheriffs, and other police agencies. The candidate should be familiar with reviewing warrants for probable cause, facilitating court-ordered evidence destruction, and addressing a wide range of legal topics. The position touches numerous areas of the law and offers variety in daily work. Overnight travel is required. The role includes regular video conferences and frequent meetings with the Office of the General Counsel. Preferred Qualifications
At least two (2) years of experience as an Assistant State Attorney or Public Defender Supervisory experience of other attorneys Experience creating and delivering legal training Prior law enforcement experience Job Related Requirements
Selected candidate must be an active member of The Florida Bar in good standing. Day and overnight travel are required. A valid driver’s license is required. The position is subject to Level 2 background checks and CJIS security clearance, including fingerprinting, pursuant to Florida Statutes. Applicants must disclose criminal records that have been sealed or expunged as applicable. General Information
The selection process may include a skill assessment and/or oral interview. Applicants may be fingerprinted as part of a background investigation; FBI criminal history checks will be conducted.
