Overview
The Transportation & Environmental Services Department is inviting qualified individuals to apply for our Civil Engineer III position in the Sanitary Infrastructure Division. This position is responsible for managing the planning level engineering for sanitary sewer capital infrastructure projects and other sanitary sewer programs. The employee will utilize prior engineering experience to resolve critical issues on complex projects. The employee is expected to have a strong technical background in civil engineering and experience working on engineering projects, along with strong time management skills and ability to effectively manage competing priorities. Work is performed with considerable independence and independent judgement, while ensuring compliance with City policies and procedures.
The Opportunity – Examples of Work
Responsible for the management of sanitary sewer programs, including projects related to asset management, FOG and infiltration and inflow into sanitary sewer systems;
Monitors sanitary sewer projects, including the work done by consultant teams, to ensure conformance with scope, schedule and budget;
Ensures that projects conform to all applicable City standards and are in conformance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations;
Works collaboratively with the Department of Project Implementation to ensure a seamless transition of projects from planning level engineering stage to design and construction;
Provides comprehensive reviews on engineering plans, specifications, and other engineering related reports/documents throughout the design process, along with monitoring projects during construction;
Works with stakeholders, engages the community, and presents information regarding sanitary related programs to residents, outside agencies, senior staff, and City officials.
Assists in the development of the Sanitary Sewer Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and operating budget for the Sanitary Infrastructure Division;
Routinely reports project progress to senior project engineer and seeks assistance with project challenges;
Continues to grow technical knowledge in the planning level engineering and operation of sanitary sewer collection systems. Responsible for meeting all certification requirements and seeking out coaching and assistance on unfamiliar work.
Committed to continually improving engineering skills and knowledge;
Approaches work with a critical eye, challenging accepted practices, seeking new approaches and continuous improvement.
Performs related work as required.

Possess a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or other related field, and a minimum of five (5) years of experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
To be considered a preferred applicant, candidates should have a minimum of two (2) years of engineering experience related to sanitary sewer collection systems and be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia registration by reciprocity.
This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks.
