Caterpillar is seeking a Controls Engineer to join the Electric Powertrain Control Systems team. This role is focused on the design, development, simulation, and validation of electric powertrain controls. The engineer will develop scalable control features to support a variety of electrified powertrain system architectures. This position directly contributes to Caterpillar’s current and future electrified powertrain products and provides the opportunity to work on innovative solutions that shape the future of electric vehicles.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement software for embedded devices and systems, from requirements to production and deployment. Develop powertrain controls requirements based on machine-level performance and functional requirements. Build and validate control features for various electromechanical system architectures using MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow. Apply virtual product development tools for functional testing, powertrain optimization, and performance verification. Conduct control system validation through simulation, lab, and machine development, utilizing CAN and Ethernet-based tools. Analyze data, investigate issues to root cause, and document control feature functionality and performance. Collaborate frequently with global process partners, engineers, and technical leaders to deliver high-quality products. Support development and troubleshooting of electromechanical, transmission, hybrid, or powertrain controls. Required Skills & Experience
Electrification background is required. Model-based controls development using MATLAB/Simulink and Stateflow. Hands-on experience with virtual product development and lab/machine/vehicle testing. Experience developing electromechanical, hybrid, transmission, or powertrain controls. Familiarity with CAN development tools (Vector CANape, CANalyzer, or ATI Vision). Solid programming knowledge (C/C++); ability to troubleshoot and optimize embedded systems. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills. Excellent written and verbal communication abilities. Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related engineering field. 5–7 years of relevant industry experience. Master’s degree in a related field. 2+ years of post-graduate experience. Experience from the automotive industry with embedded systems and software is highly valued. Employment type
