CSS has a need for a Supervisory/Lead Chemist for our EPA mobile laboratory program, in our Emergency Response and Disaster Recovery division, located in Castle Rock.
The primary function of the mobile laboratories is to provide on-site and remote chemical analysis during incidents of national significance. This includes analysis of all sample matrices (air, soil, water, and surface wipe) for toxic industrial chemicals, pharmaceuticals, chemical warfare agents, and their breakdown products. The position requires background screening, US citizenship, participation in medical monitoring, and some travel.
Responsibilities:
Organize and direct daily activities at PHILIS's Castle Rock, CO laboratory. Supervise laboratory personnel and maintenance staff. Ensure adherence to quality assurance and quality control policies, and implement corrective actions when necessary. Prepare and review reports.
Perform laboratory analysis using GC/MS, GC TOF, or LC/MS/MS, and validate data to maintain throughput. Utilize software such as MassHunter, TraceFinder, MassLynx, and LIMS for data analysis.
Maintain instruments and laboratory, document data in official notebooks, order supplies, and ensure a safe working environment. Prepare data packages and reports.
Evaluate operations and recommend improvements. Lead planning and strategy meetings. Suggest modifications to protocols, SOPs, equipment, processes, or techniques. Participate in equipment setup, operation, and monitoring, including complex procedures involving novel samples.
Provide technical guidance and oversight to the laboratory team. Assist with lab maintenance, schedule experiments, suggest new equipment, and maintain safety standards.
Travel:
Able to travel with mobile laboratories for field work up to 2-week intervals as needed.
Qualifications:
BS in Chemistry or a related physical science from an accredited institution. 6-10 years of experience in environmental laboratory operations, specifically in organic environmental analysis. At least 4 years of supervisory or leadership experience. Experience with LC/MSMS, GC/MS, or GC TOF. Knowledge of LIMS and instrument software. Familiarity with standard laboratory procedures and concepts. Ability to plan and accomplish goals relying on experience and judgment. Experience in mobile laboratory operations is a plus. Knowledge of analytical chemistry concepts and EPA SW-846 methods. Understanding of quality assurance and NELAP standards. Ability to perform complex tasks with creativity and autonomy. Must pass drug screening, medical monitoring, and background checks.
