Senior High Voltage (HV) and/or Medium Voltage (MV) Electrical Engineer
Fleet Data Centers is hiring a Senior High Voltage (HV) and/or Medium Voltage (MV) Electrical Engineer to lead complex power system design and optimization for high/medium voltage substations, transformers, and critical power infrastructure supporting hyperscale data centers. The role involves overseeing electrical infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to optimize data center performance and efficiency. This is a hands-on role with responsibility for the strategic direction, design, and implementation of electrical infrastructure for data centers across multiple regions. The ideal candidate will be a technical expert in substation engineering, with a deep understanding of data center operations, sustainability initiatives, and reliability requirements. The focus will be on the design and construction of HV/MV substations, with an emphasis on resilient, cost-effective electrical distribution systems to achieve world-class uptime. Key Responsibilities
Power System Design & Leadership: engage with customers for performance and architectural design parameters to inform substation and distribution system design; lead design and optimization of HV/MV substations including transformers, switchgear, protective relaying, bus duct systems, controls, and grounding schemes; oversee equipment selection and integration to maintain uptime and efficiency; drive large-scale projects from conceptual design through construction and commissioning. Technical Expertise & Innovation: provide leadership for electrical power systems emphasizing reliability, redundancy, scalability, and innovative design practices; implement fault analysis, load flow, short-circuit analysis, and relay coordination; champion adoption of renewable energy and integration with green power sources. Global Standardization & Compliance: define and enforce global standards for HV/MV substation design, installation, and operation; ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, NERC, IEC, UL and other applicable codes; collaborate with regulatory authorities, utilities, and EPC contractors to secure approvals and manage interfaces with the power grid. Cross-Functional Collaboration: work with operations, mechanical, control systems, construction management, and cloud infrastructure architects; engage external stakeholders such as utilities, vendors, contractors, and engineering consultants; support site selection with power feasibility studies and grid availability analysis. Risk Mitigation & Reliability Engineering: analyze risks and implement fault-tolerance strategies (redundancy, failover, black-start capabilities); lead root cause analysis of outages and develop actions to improve reliability and reduce downtime; develop long-term upgrade and end-of-life plans. Project Management: lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver large electrical projects on time and within budget; mentor junior engineers and external contractors to foster innovation and continuous improvement. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or related field. 15+ years of experience in electrical power systems engineering with substantial HV/MV substation design and operations experience. Proficiency with power system analysis software (e.g., ETAP, SKM, PowerWorld) and CAD tools for electrical design. Proven track record designing and implementing HV/MV substations in mission-critical facilities (data centers, industrial plants, or utilities). Strong understanding of electrical system protection, power distribution, and load management; knowledge of regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements (e.g., NEC, IEEE, NERC, UL). Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification. Experience with hyperscale data centers and cloud environments. Experience integrating renewable energy sources (solar, wind) into high-voltage systems and familiarity with energy storage integration. Demonstrated leadership and experience directing large, multidisciplinary engineering teams. Key Competencies
Integrity and Ethical Standards Effective Communication Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Problem Solving Leadership Strategic Thinking Attention to Detail Working Conditions
Occasional travel to data center sites across regions (up to 25%). Work may occur in office environments and active construction sites with safety protocols. Location & Compensation
Location: Denver, CO with consideration for applicants in Austin, TX; Seattle, WA; and Northern Virginia. Remote work may be considered. Expected salary range: $150,000 – $200,000 including bonus. Fleet Data Centers offers competitive compensation and benefits. This job description is not all-inclusive; duties may be assigned as needed. Fleet Data Centers is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
