Overview

Senior Substation Physical Engineer – WSP in the U.S. (Rochester, NY; Buffalo, NY also considered). Responsibilities

Prepare and review conceptual design for the high voltage substation design projects. Prepare and review project specifications for procurement of major substation equipment, including transformers, switchgear, breakers, bus work, and control buildings. Prepare One-line diagrams aligned with system study requirements. Prepare grounding and lightning protection studies for major substations. Prepare general arrangement and layout drawings. Demonstrate strong substation civil engineering knowledge. Prepare and review major equipment bid specifications. Prepare detailed cost estimates and probability modeling. Prepare structure calculations. Address insulation, AC interference, static wire, grounding studies. Ensure compliance with industry standards, good engineering practice, and constructability. Coordinate/supervise design activities of multi-disciplinined project team members as needed. Provide construction support: resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during construction. Maintain complete project documentation for high voltage substation protection and control design and construction (as-builts, closeout information). Maintain good working relationships with project teams and internal/external groups (procurement, construction, project management, material suppliers, contractors). Mentor and guide developing engineers within the department. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies. Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. 5+ years’ post-education experience, preferably in high voltage substation protection and control design. Experience with AutoCAD; AutoCAD Electrical is an asset. Experience with CDEGS and PSCAD; PSCAD or EMTP is an asset. Experience with MathCAD, ASPEN or ETAP is an asset. Experience in the design of wiring schematics. Knowledge of modern power system, power system protection and relay technologies. Strong client focus and knowledge of High Voltage & Utility codes and standards. Proficiency with MS Office, MathCAD, and PDF authoring tools (Bluebeam or similar). Effective communication and ability to work with team members remotely via MS Teams, email, or phone. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP safety policies. Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek; occasional travel may be required. Position is located at client offices and subject to client approval of candidates. Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Engineering. Essential Professional Licensure/Certification or eligible to register. Compensation & Benefits
