Opto-Mechanical Engineer
to contribute to our cutting-edge near-eye display technology. The ideal candidate will have 4-8 years of experience in design and production environments, focusing on packaging and mechanisms of optics for advanced vision systems. This role offers an exciting opportunity to be part of revolutionary technology in a fast-growing field, working closely with mechanical engineering, optical, and industrial design teams. The position reports to the Director of Mechanical Engineering. Annual salary ranges from $140,000 to $170,000, based on experience, with stock options, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits, 401k matching, unlimited PTO, office snacks, and team lunches. The role is based in our dog-friendly office in downtown San Mateo, CA, near Caltrain. Responsibilities
Design opto-mechanical components and mechanisms to enclose, retain, and maintain alignment of optical elements within system tolerance specifications. Select materials for optical bench assemblies based on optical alignment tolerance, manufacturing tolerances, temperature variation, and wear. Collaborate with optical engineers to ensure components meet performance requirements. Support operations as a technical resource on optics issues. Assist the optics development team during engineering builds and production ramp-ups. Inspect parts against engineering drawings and schematics. Assemble optics and mechanical prototypes from drawings. Conduct prototype testing and documentation. Inspect products and processes, identify flaws, and suggest improvements. Assemble, tear down, and debug prototypes. Produce design documentation for vendors, including drawings with specifications, tolerances, and process steps. Travel overseas as needed. Qualifications
Interest in solving challenging problems supported by data. Willingness to explore new solutions and share challenges. A proactive, helpful mindset. Curiosity and humility. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in mechanical or optical engineering or related field. 4-8 years of experience in design and manufacturing of optical systems for consumer electronics. Proficiency with 3D modeling and 2D drafting using SolidWorks or similar CAD software. Familiarity with optical design software is a plus.
