The R&D Process Engineer (plant focused) is responsible for developing, analyzing, and implementing new or modified process technologies, products, equipment, and systems for all plant manufacturing processes under the guidance of the plant leadership team. This position provides leadership in problem solving and supports production personnel to improve quality and productivity while aiming to reduce operating costs. The R&D Process Engineer implements process improvements and controls to reduce defects, scrap, rework, and downtime in production. Developmental work is coordinated with all necessary departments and is performed in accordance with acceptable and customary manufacturing practices while utilizing quality improvement techniques and experimental designs.
Responsibilities
Process improvement - Uses process data (defect, scrap, rework, OEE, etc.) to identify process weaknesses and develops process methods, materials, training, and equipment modifications to obtain improvement. Participates in and leads task groups; interacts with production personnel as part of the improvement process. Supports Carlisle Operating System initiatives through training and coaching.
Technical assistance to production personnel - Resolves problems related to materials, methods, and equipment. Develops expertise in plant processes (including compounding, extrusion, web handling, adhesive coating) and identifies root causes to implement permanent corrective measures. Coaches production personnel to assume line ownership.
Process control - Maintains control of production processes and their variability through written process specifications and statistical process control methods. Monitors factors such as scrap, defects, rework, throughput, dimensional characteristics, and related customer requirements.
Project management/support - Leads projects such as new technology introduction, cost reduction, R&D trials, new product development, process start-up, and justification of new equipment or capital improvements.
Lean methodologies - Participates in site metrics development and tracking; conducts layered audits of equipment; contributes to a 3-year technical roadmap. Provides mentorship and guidance on projects and technical issues.
Information systems - Maintains calibration of dimensional control systems, tracking systems for scrap/defect/rework, and reporting. Works with SAP and other process control systems and prepares project/process reports.
Other duties - Performs additional duties as required or assigned.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledge:
Plastics manufacturing technology with emphasis on sheeting products and web handling
Compounding, powder blending, extrusion, windup equipment, processing methods
Testing for physical processing and chemical properties
Plastic compounding and interaction of raw materials
Plant processing specifications, procedures, and grading standards
Quality improvement/control methods including SPC, DOE, gage R&R, and data analysis
Commercial roofing application and installation
Sheeting thickness control systems
Company structure and functions; production equipment operation including related machinery
General material handling equipment knowledge
Strong problem solving using DMAIC, Ishikawa, Five Why
Skills:
Individual and team problem solving methods (5C, A3)
Troubleshooting plastic sheeting processes to identify inefficiencies
Project management and facilitation
Interpersonal skills for selling concepts, listening, resolving conflicts
Abilities:
Operating PCs and software such as Microsoft Office, SAP, SFIS, and other process control systems
Interpreting laboratory tests
Effective communication with management and plant teams
Writing clear technical/monthly reports to interpret data
Education And Experience
Required:
Education: BS in Engineering or Science with math through algebra/geometry, chemistry, and physics
Experience: 1-5 years of plastic/rubber processing in a technical support role
Preferred:
Coursework in statistical process control and plastics technology
5+ years of plastic/rubber processing experience in a technical support role
Lean six sigma certification
