Controls Engineer

Milwaukee Tool . Under the direction of and reporting to Principal Automation Engineer, this role develops and implements sustainable, robust, and reliable manufacturing processes with a strong emphasis on controls, automation, and data integration. The engineer will lead programming, electrical design, and documentation, specify components, support installation and functionality of advanced equipment systems, and create digital solutions to connect, monitor, and optimize performance. This position works in a team environment and supports the development and manufacturing of power tool batteries.
Responsibilities
Evaluate, recommend, and execute Industry 4.0 and Digital Transformation technologies. Collaborate with Global & Site AME, IT, Data & Analytics, and QE resources to develop innovative manufacturing process, data, and quality solutions. Apply knowledge of production manufacturing assembly processes; automation, resistance and laser welding, part handling, etc. Leverage available machine data for use in process control plans, SPC, and product traceability. Integrate automation components such as PLCs (Siemens & AB), HMIs, servo and VFD drives, industrial robots, machine vision and inspection systems, laser marking and welding, material handling and feeding systems, and safety light curtains. Utilize data, controls, and connectivity in a prototyping space to optimize engineering samples for evaluation and testing. Specify, configure, and integrate automation components such as motors, drives, sensors, vision systems, robotics, and welding systems.
Digital & Data Systems
Develop Python scripts and applications for automation, data processing, and equipment connectivity. Enable SMEs with machine data to optimize prototyping and create a structured approach to test results for AME labs globally. Collaborate with IT and Data & Analytics teams to ensure proper infrastructure design, networking, and cybersecurity for connected equipment. Support OPC-UA, SQL, and other industrial communication protocols to enable data collection and integration.
Project Management Skills
Lead manufacturing projects, providing direction, guidance and engineering expertise to team members. Facilitate project flow involving regular contact with engineering, manufacturing and other cross-functional teams when necessary. Present project status to team and management with clear verbal and written communication. Provide input with cross-functional teams on baseline staffing and skillset related to process complexity. Demonstrate interpersonal skills to collaborate in a team environment and drive solutions for the business. Lead operations milestone delivery through the VIGOR process.
Other Requirements
Ability to travel domestically and internationally for machine and/or concept evaluations. Estimated yearly travel: 10%-20%; trips to drive execution and alignment across power tool manufacturing sites. Ability to learn new technical material. Hands-on involvement with each upcoming engineering project.
Education And Experience Requirements
Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline. 2–7+ years of machine control, automation design, and programming experience, preferably with custom equipment. Preferred experience with Industry 4.0 & Digital Transformation technologies. Demonstrated experience in PLC/HMI programming, controls integration, and machine commissioning. Advanced computer knowledge and skills in MS Office, MS Project, Power BI, Visio, or other project management & visualization software. Working knowledge of IT infrastructure, networking, and industrial connectivity.
