General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide. We are looking for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Rancho Bernardo. With limited direction, this position exercises latitude for initiating and developing designs, procedures, techniques and solutions to resolve advanced opto-mechanical engineering problems. Assignments are outlined in terms of broad specifications, objectives, possible results anticipated and critical reference points requiring special attention. The role may involve leading a project and guiding design or technical staff, with responsibilities including documenting findings, communicating results, and presenting to internal and external customers. It may also involve representing the organization as a prime technical contact on small projects. Duties & Responsibilities
Develop innovative technical solutions to maintain optical performance of hardware through knowledge of thermal and structural impacts to an optical system. Systems may be terrestrial, airborne or space related. Provide focal point for technical communication within the company management and may represent the company as the prime technical contact to customers and/or government regulatory agencies. Document work through drawings, presentations, analysis and test reports. Provide technical presentations as required to internal and external customers. Utilize CAD software (SolidWorks) for design generation. Provide expert guidance and consulting to other staff members working on difficult opto-mechanical problems. Anticipate future engineering needs and the modifications required to accomplish a technical goal. May assume technical and engineering responsibility of the success of an identifiable project. Direct activities of design or technical staff and may lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Perform other duties as assigned. Observe all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the company. Work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices. Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience; six+ years with a bachelor’s, four+ with a masters, or two+ with a PhD. Substitution of equivalent engineering experience is possible. Prior experience in opto-mechanical engineering or optical-related technologies. Understanding of optical integration techniques and considerations. Ability to assist or perform functional testing, data capture, alignment verification, etc. Demonstrates extensive technical expertise in opto-mechanical principles, with ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet deadlines; including project leadership experience. Experience in detailed design and troubleshooting of projectile and missile optical subsystems is desired. Ability to quickly understand new concepts and apply them in an evolving environment. Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills for interfacing with other departments and professionals; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and leading less experienced staff. Customer-focused; develops plans based on innovative designs to resolve advanced engineering problems. Ability to work independently and in a team; capable of leading programs/projects/initiatives. Willingness to work extended hours and travel as required. Desirable: Professional Engineering License, published works in engineering journals, and invited presentation at engineering symposia. Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required. Job Details
