Job Summary The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department independently plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care in patient care situations using standards of care, policy and procedure. Provides direct nursing care to patients, assumes teaching and leadership responsibilities. Participates in shared decision making, unit committee and quality improvement activities. Needs minimal supervision. Primary role of the RN is the care for all types and age groups of emergency and minor care patients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Develops plan that includes strategies to attain expected outcomes.

Implements the plan of care interventions and medical plan of care as appropriate.

Coordinates care delivery.

Employs patient teaching to promote health and safety.

Evaluates progress toward outcomes.

Practices ethically.

Attains knowledge and competence that reflects current nursing practice.

Integrates evidence and research findings into practice.

Contributes to quality nursing practice and shared decision making (SDM) by supporting council decisions, implementation of decisions and active participation in SDM.

Communicates effectively in all areas of practice.

Demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting.

Collaborates with patient, family, inter-professional team, and others in the conduct of nursing practice.

Uses appropriate resources to plan and provide nursing services that are safe, effective, and financially responsible.

Practices in an environmentally safe and healthy manner.

Fosters and participates in the shared decision-making model of the NCH Healthcare System.

Uses the appropriate aged Adult or Pediatric Triage Assessment sheet which utilizes the five-tiered system.

Monitoring skills: cardiac rhythm interpretation, pulse oximetry, hemodynamic measurements and interpretation.

Maintains Emergency Department certifications (BLS, ACLS, and PALS).

Safe use, knowledge and troubleshooting of Emergency Department equipment.

Participates in orientation of new nursing personnel and acts as a preceptor.

Cross-train to all areas of the Emergency Department including EDX and MIN ADULT ED.

Assists in the care of admitted patients and with inpatient orders for patients waiting for admission.

Maintains continuum of care by referral to Follow Up Nurse, Case Manager, or appropriate community agencies.

Knowledgeable of patient tracking system and keeps the system updated timely.

Able to function in a fast-paced, high-volume environment and make rapid critical decisions.

Collaborates with peers to coordinate department activities and supports team needs.

Flexible in rotation of schedules to meet department needs.

Education, Experience and Qualifications Candidates with Emergency Department experience who will not be entering a fellowship program.

Minimum of 1 year of RN experience in acute care. At least one year in Emergency or one year in Pediatric ICU acute care is required.

Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the State of Florida.

BLS certification required from American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

ALS certification required from American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

PALS certification required from American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

ENPC desirable.

TNCC desirable.

Candidates WITHOUT Emergency Department experience and New Graduates RN will complete an Emergency Department fellowship program. New graduate nurses will be considered for the program.

Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the State of Florida.

BLS certification required from American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

ALS and PALS certification will be obtained during the program.

BSN preferred.

Required to sign a Fellowship agreement with a 2-year employment commitment to remain in the Emergency Department in a full-time position after completion of training.

Intermediate computer knowledge: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
