About The Role
We are seeking a
Substation Commissioning Engineer
responsible for verifying that plant equipment complies with project contracts and specifications, ensuring operational feasibility, and confirming that systems are installed and tested according to supplier and engineering requirements. The role supports the full commissioning lifecycle—from construction turnover to startup, operations, and final client handover. This position also assists with implementing Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) programs and supports field commissioning leadership activities.
Essential Functions
Develop commissioning packages and manage associated documentation. Assist in creating and maintaining detailed testing and commissioning schedules. Plan commissioning activities and major project milestones such as: Relay testing Equipment functional testing SCADA checkout End-to-end system verification Oversee the process from construction completion through energization and client turnover. Create and execute commissioning procedures that meet contractual and technical requirements. Prepare for and coordinate key commissioning efforts, including equipment and system walkdowns. Identify and manage deficiencies, spare parts, and consumables throughout the commissioning process. Execute commissioning in accordance with specifications, ensuring efficient and timely turnover. Lead efforts within the engineer’s discipline by: Verifying installation quality Confirming operational feasibility Documenting field engineering changes (“as-builts”) Ensuring systems are tested per vendor instructions Provide functional oversight of other engineers and technical personnel as needed. Review and prepare technical reports that summarize testing status, findings, and variances. Ensure all safety and quality protocols are followed during commissioning. Support continuous improvement and participate in change management processes.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Familiarity with electrical power system principles and commissioning best practices. Ability to interpret project instructions, technical drawings, and contract documents. Strong multitasking, organizational, and problem-solving capabilities. Supervisory and communication skills in technical field environments. Competence with engineering tools and software used in commissioning or design. Ability to lead system testing and verify compliance with supplier specifications. Experience documenting changes and reporting deviations from planned designs. Knowledge of safety practices and OSHA requirements in high-voltage environments. Willingness to work long hours, including emergency call-backs and extended shifts. Comfortable working in construction environments with exposure to hazardous conditions.
Education And Experience
Bachelors degree in Engineering is preffered Design experience is beneficial but not required OSHA 10-Hour Training (required or willingness to obtain) Must meet pre-employment onboarding requirements, including: Criminal/civil background check Drug screening Motor vehicle record (MVR) review
