Principal Substation & Transmission Engineer We’re seeking a
Principal Substation & Transmission Engineer
to lead the design, development, and optimization of high-voltage systems—while shaping the future of our engineering practices. This role blends hands-on technical expertise with strategic leadership, innovation, and process improvement. The ideal candidate has an entrepreneurial mindset, thrives in fast-paced environments, and is equally comfortable solving complex engineering problems in the field as they are setting high-level technical strategy. Key Responsibilities High Voltage System Design & Standards Develop and standardize substation and transmission engineering specifications, one-line diagrams, equipment requirements, and construction standards. Perform advanced HV design tasks, including transformer and switchgear specification, protective relay coordination, transmission routing concepts, and power system studies. Define and enforce design frameworks for third-party engineering firms to ensure quality, compliance, and alignment with project objectives. Design Management & Quality Assurance Lead electrical design reviews, ensuring all work meets or exceeds industry standards, client requirements, and best practices. Provide expert guidance in high voltage engineering during internal and external design reviews. Conduct site assessments, troubleshoot design/construction challenges, and ensure timely project execution. Champion continuous improvement to enhance efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness across engineering processes. Innovation & Process Optimization Drive automation and digital tools adoption in substation/transmission design. Partner with estimating and construction teams to standardize processes for predictable, cost-effective execution. Lead risk assessment and mitigation strategies for HV projects. Advance grid integration practices, addressing reactive power, harmonic distortion, and other performance requirements. Field Engineering Leadership Mentor and develop field engineering teams in HV electrical disciplines. Establish and share best practices, tools, and procedures to scale capabilities for future projects. Oversee system integration, interconnection compliance, utility coordination, and commissioning testing through COD. Qualifications Master’s in Electrical Engineering,
Professional Engineer (PE) license
required. 8–10+ years in HV substation and transmission design, protection & control systems, and grid connection engineering. Proficiency in protective relay settings, control systems, HV equipment sizing, and grid compliance standards (FERC, NERC). Proven track record leading HV projects from concept to commissioning, including regulatory approvals. Strong mentoring, leadership, and cross-functional project management skills. Technical Skills Industry software: ETAP, PSCAD, PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, SEL. Expertise in design optimization, transmission route planning, and HV equipment specification. Familiarity with interconnection requirements in ERCOT and Southeastern utilities. Ability to guide teams through all phases—engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and testing. Travel:
10–20% for site visits, design reviews, and commissioning support. This is an opportunity to
