Overview
Senior Radiation Physicist - Radiation Oncology (Medical Center) at Houston Methodist. The role ensures the safe and accurate use of radiation for therapy as prescribed by the Physician, overseeing the technical aspects of radiation therapy, including imaging, planning, treatment, and related procedures, and protecting patients, staff and the public from radiation harm. The position performs quality assurance testing, calibrates radiation therapy equipment, leads implementation of new technologies, and develops policies and procedures. The incumbent will develop testing, evaluate performance, and maintain documentation in line with accreditation and regulatory requirements. This role may assist in training junior Radiation Physicists and residents. Responsibilities
Work with therapy staff to ensure periodic machine quality assurance is routinely performed. Supervise engineering/vendor staff to ensure machine repairs, upgrades are performed and machine performance is verified. Provide consultation to physicians and guidance to dosimetrists and therapists on simulation, planning, imaging and treatment to assure accurate delivery of prescribed radiation dosage and associated risk. Support training of departmental personnel to effectively and safely utilize equipment for patient care and support didactic education and hands-on training for residents and trainees; provide guidance and supervision to junior medical physicists. Service and Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Develop procedures for testing and evaluating performance of radiotherapy treatment and simulation equipment; assist in acceptance and commissioning plans for new radiotherapy and dosimetry equipment and software. Provide documentation that equipment meets accreditation and regulatory requirements; participate in specifying physics instrumentation for measurement and performance testing of therapeutic equipment. Participate in development and management of quality control programs for the radiation treatment facility, including accreditation requirements and policy/procedure reviews for safe and appropriate use of therapeutic radiation. Ensure QA is performed after installation, repair or upgrade of equipment; calibrate and verify beam characteristics and brachytherapy sources; ensure proper patient-specific QA and treatment plan checks as required. Advance dosimetric and beam delivery aspects of external beam delivery, brachytherapy, and special procedures (e.g., radiosurgery, TBI, total skin irradiation, intraoperative therapy). Guide acceptance testing, management and supervision of computer systems used for treatment planning and calculation of treatment times/monitor units. Coordinate development/evaluation of radiation safety program including procedures for protection of patients, workers, and the public, shielding design, and radiation safety surveys. Develop specifications for radiotherapy equipment and software; evaluate value and performance and provide purchasing recommendations. Develop and participate in clinical research and other projects aligned with departmental goals. Education and Experience
M.S. or PhD in Physical Science or related field. Five years of experience in therapeutic medical physics in a hospital/clinic setting. Licenses, Certifications
MPHYS - Medical Physicists - State Licensure AND Board certification in Therapeutic/Medical/Radiological Radiation Oncology Physics (ABR or equivalent). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrates skills and competencies to safely perform the job; ongoing assessments and evaluations will occur. Proficiency in English (spoken and written) to perform essential functions, with attention to patient and staff safety.
