Mechanical Engineer - Data Center Development - Ashburn, VA This opportunity is working directly with a leading mission-critical data center developer / investor. The company provides turnkey data center solutions custom-fit to the requirements of their client's operational needs, delivering reliability for hyperscale and enterprise facilities. The candidate should be proficient in AutoCAD and Revit, with experience in Mechanical systems design for mission-critical environments. As a subject matter expert, you will influence the design of prototypical Data Center sites, provide technical design guidance and vendor oversight, address large-scale implementation issues, and develop a strong understanding of site design and program requirements. The successful candidate will develop and implement design strategies to expand the firm’s expertise, footprint and profitability in Critical Facilities and Digital Infrastructure. The role focuses on Mechanical / Cooling Systems Engineering and Design for data center and infrastructure development, including initial design specifications and prototyping of mechanical / HVAC / cooling systems for new and expanding data centers. Knowledge should include Mechanical / HVAC / Cooling Systems, Controls, and related calculations (heating/cooling loads, ductwork, piping sizing, equipment selection, energy modeling, CFD). Experience with mechanical equipment design (HVAC, boilers, chillers, pumps, CRAC/CRAH, AHUs, etc.) is required. The candidate will help lead the design team and coordinate with trades and stakeholders on projects. Responsibilities
Manage projects, create designs and plans, gather specifications, and execute assignments in a multidisciplinary electrical engineering design role for data center facility design projects (enterprise data centers, colocation providers, hyperscale). Create conceptual designs from client meetings. Create prototypes that form the schematics used for RFPs/RFIs. Establish project objectives, policies, procedures and performance standards within company guidelines. Represent the company in project meetings. Collaborate with design staff and oversee full-cycle electrical design activities. Interact with the Project Management Team to produce construction documents, develop/edit project specifications, and lead the construction administration process. Lead design teams on projects of complex scope. Perform intermediate to advanced mechanical design tasks including development of cooling systems and topologies, infrastructure and equipment layouts, and sizing of equipment. Utilize AutoCAD and Revit to prepare drawings. Review and/or prepare specifications for mechanical systems. Develop and/or review sequences of operations. Proposal development including project scope, schedule and budget. Manage the design team, including resource forecasting and coordination. Identify potential scope changes and help develop strategies to minimize impact and manage costs and deadlines. Support client contacts and maintain long-term relationships. Survey existing building conditions, conduct field observations, and prepare technical reports of findings with commissioning support. Represent Operations in startup, testing, factory witness testing, commissioning, and turnover. Prepare project design and construction documents and progress reports for stakeholders. Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (required). Professional Engineer or candidate for PE (current FE or EIT) is a plus. 5+ years of experience in mechanical systems design for data centers or mission-critical facilities. Experience with engineering consulting firms (A/E, MEP) is required. Experience with hyperscale/colocation/enterprise/complex data center design projects is required. Proficiency with Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, BIM; experience with Trane Trace or IES VE Energy Modeling is a plus. Knowledge of heating and cooling load calculations, ductwork and piping sizing, HVAC equipment selection, energy modeling, CFD, and related calculations. Experience with mechanical/HVAC systems/controls design and installation; familiarity with equipment such as HVAC units, boilers, chillers, pumps, CRAC/CRAH, AHUs. Knowledge of codes and specifications for mechanical systems, including NEC, Life Safety, and Energy Conservation Codes. Site asset assessment experience; ability to evaluate converting existing buildings to data centers is a plus. Experience creating concept-level designs, reviewing drawings, and schematics; field observations during construction. Ability to apply building codes, permitting, local regulations, and standards. Knowledge of mission-critical equipment, design processes, pre-construction requirements, and construction processes. Ability to evaluate design and constructability of site design by third-party consultants; effective communication of complex project details to leadership, utility partners, and stakeholders. Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects with internal staff, external consultants, vendors, and stakeholders. Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills; able to work independently and in a team. Active involvement in local data center organizations (7x24, AFCOM, DCD, Uptime Institute, DICE/Bisnow, etc.). Experience or background in the military is a plus (e.g., Navy nukes, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard roles in electrical/mechanical). Submittal Instructions
