The UNC REX Labor and Delivery OR cares for patients during labor, delivery and recovery post-childbirth, and for high risk antepartum and postpartum patients. This unit includes a 3 bay OBED, 20 labor rooms, 3 operating rooms, and 3 PACU bays. Nurses on the unit circulate C-sections in collaboration with Physicians and the support of Nursing Assistants and Surgical Technicians. UNC REX has a dedicated team of OB Hospitalists and partners with private practice OB/GYNs and CNMs. Nurse/Patient Ratio: 1:1 - 1:2. The Surgical Technologist I works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring the operating room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and the operative procedure is conducted to maximize patient safety. The role requires knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique, anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools to support the physician during invasive procedures. The position requires prior Surgical Tech experience and/or completion of a Surgical Tech Program. Responsibilities

Performs technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, following accepted standards of practice. Maintains, assembles, handles, and sterilizes specialty instrumentation. Follows aseptic technique; identifies contamination or breaks and implements corrective actions. Performs surgical counts and reports discrepancies as per policy. Labels drugs and solutions; monitors quantities used. Assists in preparing and labeling surgical specimens. Plans and sets up instruments, supplies, and drapes to optimize accessibility during procedures. Assists the surgeon with an understanding of anatomy and condition affecting the procedure. Assists in case selection and instrument planning. Adapts scrubbing procedures as needed and communicates changes to the team; responds to emergencies per hospital plans. Manages inventory and stocking of supplies for operating/procedure rooms and sub-sterile areas. Identifies defective instruments or equipment and assists with troubleshooting. Supports the registered nurse during intraoperative nursing activities. Operates complex equipment; provides troubleshooting as necessary. Mentors Surgical Technician Trainees and serves as a preceptor as needed. Qualifications

Education: None required if other qualifications are met; Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or Nursing Program; or Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; or formal education/training may be substituted for 3+ years of prior experience. Licensure/Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers; graduation from surgical technology or nursing program as above. Professional Experience: 0-3 years. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Completion of UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies; strong communication and customer service skills; excellent organizational and priority-setting abilities.
