Float Pool RNs and PCTs are cross-trained to support more than 30 inpatient units—including multiple critical care areas, med/surg, oncology, telemetry, progressive care, rehabilitation, and complex specialty services—adapting in real time to fluctuations in census, acuity, and staffing demands. More than a coverage model, the Float Pool is a strategic clinical resource that partners with inpatient leadership, Central Staffing, and Hospital Administration to sustain safe care delivery and support hospital-wide operations. QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Required Education Graduate of accredited nursing program Experience: 1 year of acute med/surg nursing experience Licenses and Certifications BLS (Basic Life Support) certification, accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required upon hire ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification, accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required upon hire RN – Current Texas RN license, upon hire or NLC – Nursing Licensure Compact – Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) RN license upon hire NIHSS – National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale Certification upon hire CPI – Crisis Prevention Institute certification within 180 days Preferred Experience 2 years of nursing experience ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Job Duties Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments. Takes all assessments into consideration age-specific criteria. Anticipates patient and/or family needs and develops an appropriate plan of care in collaboration with assessments; utilizes critical thinking in planning and prioritizing nursing care. Maintains and utilizes competencies per unit expectation; identifies and implements nursing interventions based on assessments; completes documentation of interventions. Coordinates interdisciplinary plan of care; collaborates with all members of the health care team to contribute to optimal patient care. Prioritizes nursing interventions based on completed assessment; identifies changes in condition; reports changes and follows up. Evaluates interventions and modifies care; documents interventions and plan of care updates. Adheres to hospital and Department of Nursing policies, procedures, and standards while delivering care. Suggests practices to enhance nursing care based on current literature and research; provides education to patient and/or family; documents education. Obtains feedback and evaluates understanding from patient and/or family; communicates effectively with children and supports post-discharge care planning. Welcomes and orients patient and family to unit; encourages participation in care; reviews plan of care with patient and family every shift. Explains special diets, tests, procedures, and medications in understandable language; makes frequent rounds and communicates anticipated return times. Maintains accountability for actions in the workplace; reports errors and follows up; provides supervision to unlicensed staff and nurses new to the environment. Delegates duties within legal parameters; serves as advocate for patient and family; addresses complaints with supervisor as needed. Uses chain of command to resolve patient, operational, or personal work-related problems; participates in performance improvement activities as directed. Attends at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings and 100% of mandatory educational sessions; performs other duties as assigned.
