This role performs test procedures in a clinical laboratory and conveys results to the physician or designee for patient diagnosis and treatment, in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards. Responsibilities
Technical responsibilities: performs all aspects of pre-analytic workflow for the specific laboratory section, ensures orders are entered correctly, specimens are appropriate and correctly processed/transported; verifies orders and non-patient information as needed; troubleshoots unresolved orders; coordinates with physicians/nurses prior to LIS entry to resolve unclear or ambiguous orders; verifies specimens for add-on tests and generates add-on test orders; follows fraud and abuse compliance guidelines when adjusting test orders. Specimen handling: verifies labeling, evaluates specimen adequacy, documents unacceptable specimens, prioritizes processing, and aliquots specimens per SOPs. Analytical testing: performs tests per SOPs, maintains test system integrity, performs instrument maintenance, verifies reagents and supplies, ensures availability of necessary materials, and performs quality control with corrective actions as needed. Specimen preparation and transport: prepares specimens per protocols, ships or transfers specimens as required. Testing workflow: prioritizes testing based on assignment, meets defined turn-around times, and coordinates STAT tests or workload fluctuations as needed. Result review and interpretation: reviews results for completeness and accuracy, provides interpretations and correlations with other patient data, and performs reflex testing or follow-up actions as appropriate. Communication and escalation: follows notification protocols for critical values and abnormal results, escalates unresolved inquiries, and ensures appropriate documentation. Post-analytical and documentation: stores and retains documents and records per protocol; prints and reviews reports; ensures accurate billing for tests and services where applicable. Quality, safety, and compliance: ensures safety with PPE and clean work areas; adheres to SOPs and quality system responsibilities; participates in training, SOP development, and new test implementation; strives for continuous quality improvements. Qualifications
Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology, or Allied Health with qualification to take the ASCP or equivalent certification examination. General MLS or MT (ASCP) Certification or eligible; or Categorical BB, C, H, or M (ASCP) Certification or eligible. If hired after 1/19/2025, ASCP certification (or equivalent) within one year of employment. Benefits
