Overview A Communications Technician 2 is responsible for the installation and planning & layout of communications cabling and equipment in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. The technician should have experience installing basic equipment using hand tools and power tools, a basic understanding of telecom systems, blueprints, and knowledge of codes and standards. Additionally, each technician must make every effort to become a qualified BICSI Technician. Telecom technicians are full-time employees with company benefits.
Responsibilities
Knowledge and safe use of hand tools and various power tools
Wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Following safety policies and procedures
Active participation in daily safety and work briefings
Installation of various types of low voltage cable
Installation, inspection, terminating, testing, and troubleshooting of ISP/OSP telecommunications systems (fiber optics, Cat 5/6/6A and associated equipment)
Installation of pathways and cable trays
Installation of cabinets and racks
Installation of telecommunications devices
Prefabricated components and assemblies
Telecommunications grounding systems
Survey and document existing telecommunications infrastructure (copper and fiber cables, active and passive components) using electronic devices
Sketch rack elevations, floor elevations, and wall elevations
Train and supervise apprentices in a team environment to install cable from Telecommunications Rooms (TR) to work area outlets (WAO) following drawings and run lists to ensure cables are installed methodically and bundled for ease of dressing and termination
Perform quality assurance checks on the team’s work to ensure cable installs comply with applicable requirements
Maintain a clean work area and participate in job site cleanup
Secure company tools and materials daily
Up to 25% travel domestically and/or internationally
Qualifications / Skills Sets / Expectations
4+ years prior experience in the commercial communications industry
Be 18 years of age
High school diploma or GED
Excellent safety record, valid driver’s license, and clean driving record to meet corporate eligibility requirements to drive a company-owned vehicle
Successfully pass a background check and drug test
Have reliable transportation to and from the job site
Ability to pass basic telecommunications knowledge tests
Demonstrated experience and ability to read and understand plans and specifications
Strong communication, time-management, and organizational skills to meet deadlines and quality objectives
Ability to report to work on time, collaborate with others, and maintain a safe work environment
Wear long pants and a shirt that covers the shoulders (not provided by the company)
Provide basic tools from provided tool list prior to the first day of employment
Physical Abilities
Lift at least 100 pounds at one time and 60 pounds for an extended period
Relocate up to a twelve-foot stepladder without assistance
Work at various heights; climb and balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and ladders
Walk, climb, lift, squat, crawl, kneel, push, pull, and reach overhead regularly
Good vision (may be corrected), color distinction, and ability to hear and communicate in English
Possess and use a standard ladder within weight limits while carrying tools
