Collaborate with Editor-in-Chief in creating layout and determining content for The Catholic Virginian Oversee writers and photographers in various assignments Develop story ideas; assign stories and deadlines Copy-edit all articles for content, spelling, grammar, and accuracy Proof the entire newspaper before publication Write stories, conduct interviews, and take photos as needed Assist the Editor-in-Chief in creating social media platforms for The Catholic Virginian and developing social media strategy Manage and assist in maintaining timely content for the print/digital Catholic Virginian and social media platforms Evaluate material from OSV News, Catholic News Agency, and other sources for publication consideration Perform other duties as requested by the Bishop, Vicar General or Director of Communications Qualifications
Education / Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Communications/English/Journalism or related field required At least ten years’ experience in broadcast/communications industry with at least five years in Catholic media and/or newspaper production preferred A practicing Catholic in good standing who supports Church teaching is required Knowledge / Skills: Strong working knowledge of the structure and teachings of the Catholic Church Strong writing, copy-editing skills High level of attention to detail Knowledge of newspaper production and layout Knowledge of Associated Press Stylebook Ability to analyze, interpret, and use sound news judgment to make content decisions Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines Strong interpersonal, leadership, and people management skills Experience managing teams including dotted-line relationships preferred Ability to maintain confidentiality is required Proficiency with various PC software, website-building, and social media Proficiency in Adobe InDesign a plus Ability to speak/read/write Spanish fluently a plus Photography/videography skills a plus Working Conditions
The Managing Editor is a full-time position. Typical work hours are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Occasional evening/weekend work and travel will be required. Production weeks may require longer hours as needed. How to Apply
