The California Post is seeking a
Deputy Sports Editor
to help lead our sports coverage in Los Angeles. Reporting to the Sports Editor, the Deputy Sports Editor will play a key role in managing the day-to-day operation of the sports desk — from managing reporters, to ensuring our content is at a high standard. Base pay range : $100,000.00/yr - $130,000.00/yr The California Post will bring The New York Post’s DNA of powerful journalism to the West Coast and serve as a bold voice for sports in Los Angeles and beyond. Responsibilities
Support the Sports Editor in overseeing all sports coverage for the California Post Manage the daily workflow of the sports desk, set priorities, assign stories, and ensure deadlines are met Edit, polish, and elevate copy to meet the Post’s standards of clarity, impact, and voice Provide guidance, feedback, and mentorship to reporters and columnists Identify stories, trends, and cultural moments that matter to LA sports fans Collaborate with the Sports Editor on shaping coverage strategies to set the pace in the market Work with photo, design, video, and digital teams to package stories in creative, engaging ways Partner with the audience development team to expand reach of sports coverage across digital and social platforms Monitor analytics and audience insights to refine coverage and grow readership Requirements
At least 7 years of professional sports journalism experience, including newsroom leadership or editing experience Strong editing and headline-writing skills, with the ability to sharpen copy quickly under deadline pressure Proven knowledge of Los Angeles and national sports, with instincts for what stories will resonate with fans Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced newsroom Experience mentoring reporters to deliver impactful coverage Proficiency with WordPress or similar CMS; familiarity with digital workflows Strong understanding of social media and audience engagement strategies Collaborative spirit with excellent communication and organizational skills A passion for sports and storytelling that connects fans to teams, players, and culture Notes : The New York Post Media Group adheres to a hybrid work model.
