Overview
Student Engagement and Career Communications Specialist (Communications Generalist), Office of the Vice President for Student Success, Enrollment, and Institutional Effectiveness. The role develops and executes comprehensive communication strategies to connect students with co-curricular experiences, professional development opportunities, and career pathways. This position serves as the bridge between student interests and transformative experiences, creating communications that showcase involvement opportunities, demystify career preparation, connect classroom to career, celebrate student achievements, and foster lifelong community connection.
Responsibilities
Designs and maintains an integrated communications calendar for engagement and career programming (clubs, leadership development, internships, job fairs).
Crafts compelling, audience-specific content (emails, social media, videos, newsletters) that promotes involvement and career readiness.
Ensures all communications align with institutional learning outcomes and career success metrics.
Oversees engagement and career services websites, ensuring intuitive navigation and up-to-date opportunities.
Develops strategies for social media channels and digital communities for student organizations and employer partners.
Implements and optimizes CRM communications (Handshake, Salesforce) for targeted outreach.
Maintains a comprehensive database of engagement opportunities and career resources.
Serves as primary liaison between Student Affairs, Career Services, academic departments, and employer partners.
Trains student leaders, career advisors, and faculty on communication best practices.
Coordinate with Alumni Relations to showcase graduate career pathways.
Coordinates with UCM/UITS and campus teams to align communications with university branding and initiatives.
Manages relationships with internal and external stakeholders and creates communications coverage for relevant initiatives, events, and programs.
Tracks and reports on communication effectiveness through engagement and career services metrics.
Continuously evaluates and improves communication touchpoints across the student involvement journey.
Conducts regular audits of communications for accessibility (ADA) compliance and plain language standards.
Researches and implements best practices in academic communications and student self-service tools.
Regularly monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty.
Monitors industry trends and best practices and makes process and operational recommendations to manager.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or related field
8 years in a relevant field
Proficient communication skills
Maintains a high degree of professionalism
Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills
Demonstrates a high commitment to quality
Flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment
Seeks to acquire knowledge in area of specialty
Highly thorough and dependable
Demonstrates a high level of accuracy, even under pressure
