Position Summary The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Support Specialist at CNM plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive assistance to the ABE Department. The position's responsibilities include administering and scoring standardized student assessments, facilitating student intake, advisement, and registration in compliance with the requirements of ABE federal and state-funded grants. The technician contributes insights to help develop best practices for ABE departmental operations, focusing on assisting students in obtaining their high school equivalency and/or learning English as a second language. This position assists with administrative tasks, such as maintaining student records and organizing educational materials. The technician plays a crucial role in creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment for adult learners seeking to improve their basic skills.
Duties & Responsibilities Sets up and administers standardized assessments for Adult Basic Education (ABE) students, including High School Equivalency (HSE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) students, adhering to test publisher requirements and NRS guidelines.
Determines student eligibility, appropriate test level, and course placement.
Handles disputes regarding test results and re-testing, special accommodations, and student and/or faculty complaints.
Tracks student instructional hours in Laces database for ABE program grant testing requirements and determines progress testing levels according to test publisher guidelines.
Assembles, distributes, collects, and maintains inventory for faculty to test students.
Scores tests manually and electronically, assisting students in the computer lab with troubleshooting and resolving routine computer issues.
Corresponds and coordinates with faculty regarding student testing; trains faculty and staff on testing requirements and enforcement of testing policies.
Provides and interprets confidential test result data reports to faculty, staff, and students according to FERPA rules.
Greets current and prospective students, answers incoming department calls to provide information regarding programs, classes, and departmental operations.
Assists in developing standard operating procedures for the program.
Maintains filing and retention of student records in accordance with New Mexico Higher Education regulations.
Troubleshoots technical issues relating to student testing software (TABE/CASAS) with vendor and CNM Student Assessment Center staff.
Assists with internal departmental data record auditing as required by program grant.
Performs security, daily backup, and restoration checks of information; creates templates, spreadsheets, and other documents to support efficiency and accuracy for the department.
Assists with student class registration, advisement, and appointment scheduling; reviews, verifies, and processes student intake applications and related documentation.
Utilizes Banner Student Information to generate CNM student ID numbers for new students.
Performs student registration for HSE and ESL students, and provides class schedules to faculty and students.
Interprets and enforces department policies and procedures regarding student registration, multiple enrollment, and drops.
Provides office administrative support, including purchasing and textbook orders and distribution.
Participates in staff meetings and professional development training.
Trains and supervises student employees.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifcations: High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience.
