The Salvation Army of Memphis & the Mid-South Location: Burkesville, KY About this opportunity: (Seasonal) Plans, implements, coordinates, and supervises an assigned group of children and youth; promotes quality of programs and safety of campers at all times; provides guidance and role modeling to campers; promotes and stimulates camper participation; coordinates and leads campers through their daily schedule ensuring punctuality and responsibility; supervises campers during unscheduled program time and evenings; ensures compliance with camp rules and regulations at all times.
Key Responsibilities
Counselor Duties
Supervises and organizes an assigned group of campers during scheduled activities and unscheduled blocks of time in cooperation with camp rules and regulations.
Promotes and stimulates participation of campers to ensure a pleasant camp experience. Supervises cabin clean up and work details.
Coordinates and leads youth through their daily schedule ensuring punctuality and responsibility.
Lives with a group of campers and helps each camper adjust and get to know other campers and camp life. Interprets and maintains camper compliance with camp rules and health and safety regulations. Assists with program activities and other activities as assigned working closely with the program staff.
Be prepared with rainy day activities as needed.
Inspects fire extinguisher and report to Head Counselor if any extinguisher has been dispensed. Ensures cleaning solutions are locked up except during use and used only with supervision.
Ensures beds in cabins have adequate space for movement and emergency exit.
Stays in cabin with campers at night. May leave cabin for legitimate reasons with another staff member covering for you.
Moves with campers to all classes and activities and remains with them unless noted otherwise. Both counselors accompany campers back to cabin and prepare for bedtime.
No camper should be left alone in the cabin without proper staff supervision.
One counselor must be in the room with the campers 30-45 minutes after lights out.
Keeps door to room open at night to maintain order.
Maintains an incident report book for all campers; turns in the incident report at the end of each camp session and retrieves a new one at the start of the next session. Notify Head Counselor immediately of serious situations.
You may be asked to teach a class according to your experiences or to assist with one.
End-of-session duties include wiping down mattresses, sinks, showers, toilets and mopping floors with bleach water.
Provides constant care for campers in an efficient, clean, loving, safe, secure, and healthy manner and demonstrates appropriate discipline when needed.
Determines appropriate supplies and materials for activities; ensures camper safety in utilizing them.
Maintains camp materials in an orderly fashion; accountable for laundry, money and supplies for camp programs.
Prepares and maintains up-to-date records and required reports (attendance, development progress, discipline reports, etc.).
Assists in leading campers during waterfront, nature, outdoor, arts & crafts or other activities.
Ensures accountability, security and safety of children during camp activities (including free time and evenings); reports accidents to supervisor promptly.
Participates as a team member to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and all-camp activities.
Sits with campers during meals and serves as a table monitor when needed. Keeps living quarters neat and inspection-ready.
Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.
May assist in cleaning cabins, kitchen, tables, floors, etc., per sanitary standards.
May assist in preparing and serving snacks and meals; ensures campers receive nutritious and tasty food and fosters a positive mealtime atmosphere.
Music Instructor Duties
Provides quality music instruction to campers.
Teaches music theory appropriate to the level for playing purposes. Delivers suitable lessons for instruction time.
Reviews assigned homework with students and reteaches skills if necessary.
Responsible for the care of instruments during class; report needed repairs to the Divisional Music Director.
Prepares students for recitals and concerts.
Plans, schedules, assigns and monitors student work to ensure progress and completion.
Recommends and develops activities to grow musical abilities, motor and learning skills; coordinates program within camp policies and procedures.
Maintains discipline and acceptable behaviors to create a friendly and secure atmosphere during all program periods.
Participates in various classes as assigned.
Provides constant care for campers in an efficient, clean, loving, safe, secure, and healthy manner; offers physical and mental stimulation through indoor and outdoor activities.
Participates as a team member to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and all-camp activities.
Sits with campers during meals and serves as a table monitor when needed. Keeps living quarters neat and inspection-ready.
Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.
What We Are Looking For In You
Six months experience teaching child development or youth programs in a church preferred; six months experience teaching music education and teaching experience, with the ability to play and teach lessons in a classroom setting involving more than one student preferred.
Or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
Endurance including climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching; eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate activities.
Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record and communicate camper activities; ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours.
Daily exposure to sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
