Reports to the Manager, Telecommunications for Beacon Health System. Under general supervision is responsible for inspecting, testing, adjusting, maintaining and repairing telecommunication, intercommunication and call and signaling devices. Establishes testing procedures, preventative maintenance procedures in the telecommunication central equipment areas and in all areas that the communication systems are installed. Utilizes knowledge of electrical, electronic, telephone, mechanical and electro-mechanical devices to repair and maintain telecommunications, intercommunications, call and signaling devices in Beacon Health System (BHS). Ensures equipment is in a safe operating condition and meets the manufacturers' specifications. Responsibilities Inspects, tests, maintains and repairs telecommunication, intercommunication, call and signaling devices, and other related electronic, electrical and mechanical equipment by testing telecommunications, intercommunications, call and signaling devices and audio-visual distribution systems, utilizing instruments such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, test standards, frequency generators, counters and other test sets. Evaluates and analyzes problem areas of assigned equipment, determining the cause using statistical analysis and data from manufacturers and other sources, making corrections, repairs or modifications as appropriate; determines specific work methods and replacement parts to be used and whether service should be completed on site or at a vendor location using cost information. Schedules and performs preventative maintenance to ensure compliance with manufacturer recommendations and NEC. Maintains records of all repairs, testing procedures, preventive maintenance and evaluation of equipment within BHS; updates service and technical information manuals and communicates with manufacturers to obtain parts and supplies for the appropriate systems. Keeps work areas orderly, clean and safe and maintains tools, test equipment and supplies. Installs, repairs and conducts preventive maintenance on a variety of equipment, including telephone systems, intercommunication systems, nurse call systems and audio-visual equipment and other systems such as paging systems, alarm systems and patient safety communication devices. Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department Completes other job-related assignments and special projects as directed. Organizational Responsibilities Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared. Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes. Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes. Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year. Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department. Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self. Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance. Complies with established organization and department policies. Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required. Education And Experience The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of an Associate's degree in Engineering Technology or an equivalent level of related education. Two years of formal education and training in the repair and maintenance of telecommunication and electronic equipment is required. A minimum of one to two years of experience in the repair and maintenance of telecommunication systems is required. Knowledge & Skills Requires knowledge of electrical, electronic, mechanical, electro-mechanical devices and the workings of a telecommunication system. Requires the analytical skills necessary to understand data input and retrieval, mechanical systems, electrical equipment, equipment and systems installation and to troubleshoot the assigned and associated systems. Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, nurses, technologists, Hospital team members and vendors (for example, in order to gather data and understand problems with equipment). Requires the ability to understand and comply with current Infection Control policies. Demonstrates proficiency in basic computer skills (data entry, word processing and spreadsheets). A basic understanding of database applications is required. Working Conditions Working conditions will vary from the Telecommunication repair shop to patient care areas, where isolation skills are required in dealing with communicable diseases. High risk is involved in testing and repairing equipment where high voltage and lethal energy is present. Requires the ability to work flexible hours. Hours may vary due to the importance of the telephone and intercommunication systems of the Hospital. Service on this type of equipment in an emergency situation may require work times other than during normally-scheduled working hours. Physical Demands Requires the eye-hand and fine motor coordination to work with detailed electrical and electronic parts and systems. Requires physical ability and stamina (i.e., to carry tools, parts, supplies, climb ladders, lift and move equipment etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
