POLICE PROPERTY & EVIDENCE SPECIALIST

Overview
A civilian support position under the direct supervision of the Property and Evidence Supervisor. Responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the Property and Evidence Unit, including handling discovery requests, preparing destruction orders, and performing video and photo redactions to protect sensitive information from public disclosure while ensuring compliance with IPRA (Inspection of Public Records Act) requests. Performs related work as required. Regular duty hours are 0800 to 1700 hours, Monday through Friday, totaling a 40-hour workweek. Occasional overtime or schedule adjustments may be required.
This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in receiving, inventorying, and organizing evidence and property items Prepare and process destruction orders in accordance with legal requirements Respond to and organize discovery requests, to include all forms of digital evidence, for prosecutors and defense attorneys Redact audio, video, and photographic evidence to protect sensitive information from public disclosure in response to IPRA requests Assist with the release and disposal of evidence and property Maintain chain of custody documentation and ensure accurate records Conduct data entry and barcode logging into property management systems Assist with transport of evidence to/from labs or other facilities Maintain security protocols and confidentiality at all times Support in the preparation for auctions or authorized disposals Assist in clerical functions, filing, and maintaining case-related documentation Perform duties in accordance with department policy, city ordinances, and state law Honoring subpoenas for court
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalency; and Some experience in property accountability, warehousing, police work or related field; or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work. Must successfully complete a drug screen test prior to being hired. Must undergo a rigid background investigation, including a polygraph exam.
Special Qualifications
Valid Motor Vehicle Driver’s License, equivalent to a Class “D” New Mexico driver’s license. Must not have been convicted of a felony, domestic violence, or other crime involving moral turpitude.
