Overview CITY ATTORNEY — Full-Time
Salary Range: $165,000 – DOQ and Experience
The City of Sebastian, Florida, is seeking an experienced Full-Time City Attorney. Candidates must have a degree from an accredited law school, at least seven (7) years of progressive experience in municipal, county, and administrative law. In addition to the requisite professional skills and experience, the ideal candidate must have a high degree of independence, initiative, communicate effectively, handle several assignments concurrently and develop, maintain effective working relationships, and works well with a council body and charter officers.
Responsibilities
The Sebastian City Attorney is appointed by, reports to, and serves at the pleasure of the City of Sebastian City Council.
The City Attorney attends all City Council meetings, and other advisory or appointed board meetings as directed.
Acts as legal counsel for the City, including legal advisor to the City Council, Planning and Zoning, Special Magistrate/Code Enforcement, and Construction commissions/boards, and City departments.
Works closely with the City’s Police Department; represents the City for civil forfeiture matters, requests for protection orders, and provides counsel on criminal and civil matters to the Chief of Police and staff.
Drafts administrative regulations; contracts; ordinances; resolutions; deeds; leases; quasi-judicial orders; and other relevant legal documents.
Interprets laws, rulings and regulations for the City; stays current with developments in the legal field to ensure City policies, procedures, and practices comply with local, state and federal laws.
Provides legal consultation on workplace issues, including employment/workplace law and Collective Bargaining Agreements.
Monitors and supervises outside attorneys hired on specific matters and collaborates with the City’s Insurance Carrier on defending against third party tort actions.
Qualifications & Requirements The City requires a law degree from an accredited law school and at least seven (7) years of progressive experience in municipal, county, and administrative law. The candidate must demonstrate independence, initiative, clear communication, multi-tasking ability, and the capacity to work effectively with the City Council and charter officers.
