Regional Safety Manager- Generation (Houston)
Overview:
Works within NRG’s Corporate Safety Department reporting to the Director of Safety. The Regional Safety Manager – Generation, is an essential position to promoting safety excellence within a Fortune 500 company. The position will work with the Leadership Team at each of their regional plant locations to drive a safety culture to achieve top decile safety performance. The role will provide onsite support, reinforce employee engagement, ensure safety programs are administered effectively across their region. Additionally, this position will develop various safety and metric reports, coordinate and deliver training, perform detailed incident investigations, and support other activities established by the Safety group and the Fleet Leadership Team.
Key Responsibilities:
Partner with plant leadership to develop, implement, and maintain safety programs, including safety policies, and procedures
Monitor and evaluate changes in applicable Occupational Safety and Health regulations, applicable consensus standards, standard interpretation Letters and industry best practices to ensure policies, procedures and work practices remain current
Provide leadership and guidance to plant leadership on safety matters, promoting a safety-enriched culture
Serve as a change agent to achieve a zero-injury safety culture within the region
Effectively communicate safety information to employees and plant leadership
Develop and implement strategies for continuous improvement in safety performance
Conduct regular safety audits, inspections and risk assessments. Provide recommendations and strategic support to mitigate or eliminate workplace hazards.
Track the completion of associated corrective measures and action items
Maintain NRG’s standard when conducting incident investigations identifying causal factors, root causes, and corrective actions
Maintain accurate records of safety incidents
Assist with the development and delivery of safety training
Prepare reports for Generation Leadership and regulatory agencies
Develop safety flashes, operating experience bulletins, vendor business cases, and recordability determination reports
Assist with injury management and documentation
Mentor and advise station Health and Safety Specialists
Engage with station safety committees and the Fleet Safety Steering Committee
Provide oversite of annual medical surveillance
Provide support and oversite of region Industrial Hygiene program
Promote best practices across the region by sharing information from across nrg, conferences, and industry peers.
Skills and Qualifications:
Strong understanding of safety regulations in the Electric Power Generation industry
Demonstrated experience developing Safety and Health programs
Experience in safety program management and implementation
Ability to articulate the attributes of an effective safety culture
Experience engaging workers across an organization to build a safety culture
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
Ability to conduct safety audits, investigations, and risk assessments
Demonstrates strong problem solving, critical thinking and analytical skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and safety-related software
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Experience in training and/or public speaking
Education/Experience:
Minimum of 8-10 years in the Electric Power Generation or closely related industry
Previous experience as a Supervisor of people and safety programs
Bachelor’s degree with major course work in safety and health, industrial hygiene or other closely related field is preferred
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification is preferred
Working Conditions:
This role is expected to reside in the Houston area with an expectation of a minimum of 75% of the time per week spent working at a plant location. The primary work will be performed onsite at our Generation fleet and requires the ability to work outdoors in environments that often experience adverse weather conditions (heat, dust, rain, wind, snow, etc.) and working at heights. Some site support activities (maintenance outages and investigations) may be time sensitive and for a duration measured in concurrent days or weeks. This role may require work after normal working hours, at night, on weekends, holidays and includes overnight travel. Ability to travel extensively on short notice is required. Person is required to respond by telephone or in person during working hours and after working hours.
