Wellabe is looking for an AVP Actuary Valuation & Modernization to join our team. This individual will provide leadership and direction to the actuarial function of the organization as it relates to establishing proper reserves for Wellabe companies and explaining financial results. The individual will provide expertise and support for asset adequacy testing, the annual audit, and the quinquennial state exam. This individual will oversee continuous improvement and modernization of actuarial processes. They will ensure adherence to all departmental, regulatory, and actuarial guidelines for supported product lines. Essential functions
Oversees the preparation and interpretation of actuarial data and related formulae. Provides advice and counsel regarding complex actuarial situations. Ensures compliance with statutory reserve requirements. Directs monthly/quarterly/annual close for actuarial items, including valuation of reserves for all Wellabe entities and review of NAIC risk-based capital calculations. Supports financial reporting and analysis for management and the board. Ensures adherence to all MAR controls related to reserves. Maintains appropriate documentation of actuarial processes and work products. Drives automation and use of AI to improve actuarial and reporting processes. Serves as Deputy / Successor Appointed Actuary, progressing to signing responsibilities upon meeting American Academy of Actuaries qualification standards. Build and lead a high performing team (approx. 3–5 actuarial professionals), overseeing workflow, providing feedback, fostering a positive work environment, developing staff, and hiring as needed. Collaborates with Accounting, Internal Audit, Risk, Modeling, and Data Asset Management to ensure accuracy and integrity of Finance work products. Partners with Finance/Legal on reinsurance accounting, treaty implementations, and related disclosures; ensures valuation consistency for ceded/assumed blocks. Provides thought leadership to the broader Finance organization. Success Profile
Must have exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak to executive and board level officers in formal settings. Advanced actuarial skills on reserving, experience analysis, data management, and reporting. Advanced knowledge of insurance products, operations and existing regulations, awareness of legal, political, economic and environmental impacts on the insurance products and operations. Strong aptitude for understanding technical solutions and learning/utilizing tools. Advanced knowledge of MS Office Suite (Excel, Word and PowerPoint). High ability to solve problems and work under pressure. Strong analytic and critical thinking skills backed by exceptional ability to articulate and defend complex ideas and strategies to non-technical audiences in order to assure maximum understanding and positive impact of ideas. Demonstrated success working in cross-functional collaborative teams and in working with senior management. Strong organizational skills with a drive for transparency and efficiency. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with at least a minor in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, or computer science. FSA designation strongly preferred. MAAA designation is a plus. 7+ years' actuarial experience with deep expertise in US statutory and US GAAP (LDTI) valuation; strong command of asset adequacy analysis/CFT, RBC, reserve governance, and controls. Experience with actuarial modeling software. Prior experience as Appointed Actuary (or deputy) is a plus. Experience with GAAP LDTI is a plus. Benefits
