Open Rank Assistant or Associate Professor in Native American History THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO seeks applications for an Open Rank Assistant or Associate Professor in the History of Native America with an anticipated start date of August 2026. The University of New Mexico (UNM), located in Albuquerque, is New Mexico’s flagship institution. It is a “very high activity” Carnegie Research University, a Minority-serving institution, and a Hispanic-serving institution. The History Department features strong interconnected teaching and graduate programs on the U.S. West, United States, and Latin America. UNM is also a member of the Newberry Consortium in American Indian Studies (NCAIS). We seek a scholar who demonstrates a commitment to historical research on Native America, period and region open, who can offer undergraduate and graduate courses in Native American history, and who is prepared to take an active role in mentoring PhD and master’s students in a graduate program with a long tradition of training scholars in the field. Duties include teaching various courses in the program per semester.The successful candidate will hold the PhD in History or a related discipline with significant training in Native American history. The degree must be awarded by the date of appointment. The candidate will demonstrate the qualifications summarized below: Minimum qualification: (1) PhD in History or a related discipline with significant training and focus in Native American history, with degree awarded by the date of appointment. Preferred qualifications: (1) a record of publication or commitment to publish within the field of Native American History as demonstrated in the CV, cover letter, and writing sample; (2) teaching experience at the university or college level, including ability to teach upper-division courses in Native American history and lower-division survey courses as demonstrated in some or all of the following: sample syllabi, classroom experience, cover letter, and teaching evaluations; (3) interest and/or experience in mentoring undergraduates and graduate students at the master’s and PhD levels as demonstrated in the CV and cover letter; (4) ability in or potential for building relationships with Native communities and/or aligning research, teaching, or service with Native community interests and needs, as demonstrated in the CV, cover letter, and/or writing sample, and (5) a commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university’s mission to serve local and global communities. Required documents : (1) a cover letter detailing the applicant’s qualifications as they relate to the minimum and preferred criteria (e.g., research agenda, teaching experience, and other relevant professional experience) and listing three references and their contact information; (2) a copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae (include an email address and telephone number); (3) an article-length writing sample of scholarly work; (4) a sample syllabus for an upper-division undergraduate course and a list of courses that the candidate has taught or is prepared to teach; (5) teaching evaluations, if available; and (6) an official transcript.
