Overview
1898 & Co., a division of Burns & McDonnell, is seeking an experienced Grid Systems Solution Architect to provide utility grid operations modernization consulting services for our electric utility clients. The selected candidate will join the Enterprise System & Integration team, which focuses on delivering high-value Enterprise Solution Services through a variety of leading technologies. The grid operations architect shall possess strong electric utility business and technology acumen and provide professional consulting services focused on solutions such as SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, and DERMS. Candidates must have strong project execution capabilities, leadership and collaboration skills, and excellent communication, with a focus on continuous improvement and enterprise innovation, delivering high-quality work to clients. The grid operations architect provides strategic guidance, research, planning, and best practices to client executives to help make investment decisions aligned with the long-term vision of the organization. This position focuses on grid automation support services, emphasizing SCADA systems, transmission, distribution, and DERMS/EMS/OMS/DMS/ADMS, and the execution of various grid modernization programs for electric utility clients. The role leads efforts to identify and deliver grid operations services that support grid modernization assessments, technology roadmaps, software upgrades, and implementations, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, customer commitment, and industry best practices. Responsibilities
Apply industry experience and best practices to architect, design, develop, and implement SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, and DERMS solutions to support complex business requirements. Utilize in-depth knowledge of SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, and DERMS to support commissioning, testing, and deployment. Provide field support, troubleshooting, and project coordination to enhance and maintain SCADA, EMS, OMS, DMS, ADMS, and DERMS; lead commissioning of new SCADA systems and perform point testing or field data verification for advanced distribution applications such as FLISR, VVO, and DER Dispatch. Lead or assist with program estimating, planning, budgeting, and be accountable for program/project delivery execution. Support Analysis, Design, Build, Test, Triaging defects, Configuration, and Deployment activities. Support Enterprise Program Management activities using methodologies such as Waterfall and Agile. Ensure successful completion of projects within budget, scope, and quality, and monitor progress to meet milestones and delivery dates. Ensure overall project quality of deliverables. Act as an application architect and solution architect with responsibilities on the application and technical architecture teams. Assist with or lead business process design activities to drive complete application requirements: functional, quality, integration, and security. Collaborate with the application designer to create a high-level design of an end-to-end integration solution that maps data between applications. Create an inventory of cross-application interactions or interfaces based on activity and data flow diagrams. Validate that application requirements meet business process needs, stay within project scope, and are internally consistent. Validate that integration solution designs utilize integration architecture components appropriately. Lead or assist with high-level project communications and status reporting to the supporting executive team. Provide a central point of contact for project interdependencies, internal and external. Support timely development and implementation of all stages of the system. Apply project execution experience to influence project execution processes and QA/QC protocols. Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies. All other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred. Applicable work experience may be substituted for the degree requirement. Minimum 7 years of experience providing enterprise or operations architecture strategies, enterprise or operations integration solutions, and services leveraging various applications and technical platforms. Preferred: 5 years working in the Electric Utility Industry or equivalent. Excellent enterprise architecture and integration skills, including data architecture, cloud architecture, middleware, communications, and other architectural methods and practices. Experience in large-scale enterprise transformation projects using industry enterprise architecture strategy solutions and standard industry technologies. Experience with electric utility clients implementing and integrating operational systems such as OMS, DMS, ADMS, AMI, Distribution Automation, and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) is preferred. Strong ability to influence or lead project execution. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience with leading-edge applications, operations technology, and solutions utilizing various industry standard tools. Experience with a variety of project execution methodologies, including but not limited to Waterfall and Agile.
