Job Overview :
Our client is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controller to oversee the financial operations of their construction company. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing all accounting functions, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and supporting strategic decision-making to drive the company’s growth and profitability. As a key member of the finance team, the Controller will manage financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls while collaborating with project managers and other departments.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting : Oversee the preparation and timely delivery of accurate financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports. Ensure compliance with accounting principles, tax regulations, and industry standards. Manage month-end and year-end close processes. Budgeting and Forecasting : Lead the development and management of annual budgets and forecasts, ensuring alignment with project goals and company objectives. Work closely with project managers and senior leadership to monitor project budgets, track costs, and identify areas for improvement. Prepare financial projections to assist with strategic decision-making. Project Costing & Job Profitability : Review and analyze job cost reports to ensure accuracy and monitor project profitability. Implement processes for accurate job costing, including labor, materials, overhead, and subcontractor expenses. Identify and resolve discrepancies between project budgets and actual expenses. Internal Controls and Compliance : Ensure the integrity of financial reporting by establishing and maintaining strong internal controls and auditing procedures. Coordinate and oversee external audits and tax filings. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations and industry standards. Cash Flow Management : Monitor and manage the company’s cash flow, ensuring the availability of funds for ongoing and upcoming projects. Work with senior leadership to manage working capital and optimize cash flow management strategies. Team Leadership and Development : Supervise and mentor a team of accounting and finance professionals, providing guidance on accounting best practices and professional development opportunities. Foster a collaborative and productive team environment. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA preferred. 7+ years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3 years in a managerial role, preferably within the construction industry. Strong knowledge of construction accounting, including job costing, project billing, and progress tracking. Proficient in accounting software (e.g., Sage 300, Procore, QuickBooks) and Microsoft Excel. Solid understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting. Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage, motivate, and develop a team. Exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders. Preferred Skills
Experience with construction project management software. Knowledge of local, state, and federal tax laws as they apply to construction businesses. Familiarity with financial forecasting and analysis techniques specific to the construction industry. Compensation and Benefits
