General Description:
Provides genetics counseling, assessment, clinic service to patients with documentation and follow-up, teaching assistance, clinical supervision, and research assistance. Essential Responsibilities: Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. Genetic Counseling . Provides clear and concise genetic counseling to patients. Facilitates with the patient informed decision making about testing, management, and reproductive alternatives. Assessment . Assesses psychosocial factors, recognizing social, educational, and cultural issues. Identifies, coordinates, interprets, and explains genetic laboratory tests and results, and reports other diagnostic studies to the patient. Clinic Service . Elicits and interprets individual, family, medical, developmental, and reproductive histories. Determines mode of inheritance and risk of transmission of genetic conditions and birth defects. Evaluates the patient’s or family’s responses to the condition or risk of recurrence and provides client-centered counseling and anticipatory guidance. Documentation.
Provides accurate and timely written documentation of medical, genetic, counseling information and medical records to families, primary care providers or referral entity. Research . May conduct clinical research in the field of genetics, assist faculty in research projects, and write clinical case reports Teaching Assistance . Participates with faculty in educational activities as requested. Clinical Supervision . Provides clinical supervision of MS in Genetic Counseling (MSGC) program students. Memberships . Membership in the national organization, National Society of Genetics Counselors (NSGC) and other related organizations. General Responsibilities: Performs other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications : Education:
Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) program or plan to graduate in 6 months. Experience:
No experience required, but clinical competency must be exhibited in the educational program OR an equivalent combination of education and experience Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required:
Oklahoma Licensed Genetic Counselors or Temporary Genetic Counselor License Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Basic knowledge of practices and procedures in a particular field. Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the right to privacy and confidentiality. Knowledge of new and innovative approaches to genetic counseling. Ability to gather, evaluate, and interpret data. Ability to give full attention to what is being said in order to understand the problem and be able to make a decision which will benefit the patient.
