Job Summary:
Service Technicians assist the Service Director in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing vehicles. Technicians use diagnostic tools to identify the source of problems and then make adjustments or repairs. As with all positions within dealerships, Technicians are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards.
Essential Functions:
Identifies mechanical problems, either visually or with computer diagnostic equipment.
Performs tests on specific parts and systems to confirm proper mechanical function; ensures that all critical parts are examined.
Performs routine and preventive maintenance, including oil changes and tune-ups.
Diagnoses the cause of malfunctions and performs work specified on the repair order with efficiency and in accordance with dealership and/or factory standards.
Repairs or replaces all parts of a vehicle including wheels, axles, frames, defective ball joint suspensions, and brake shoes; installs and repairs air conditioners and services components such as compressors, condensers, and controls; tests electronic computer components in automobiles to ensure that they are working properly.
Communicates directly with the Service Advisor so that customers can be informed if any additional service is needed.
Provides an estimate of time needed for additional repairs.
Inspects and tests new vehicles for damage and records findings so that necessary repairs can be made.
Supervises and trains apprentice or entry-level Technicians.
Repairs or replaces malfunctioning parts and systems, such as brake pads, belts, water pumps, transmissions, and other mechanical parts.
Performs further tests, which may include test driving the vehicle, to ensure repairs are completed correctly.
Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of 2 years’ experience as an entry-level automotive technician.
Valid Driver’s license and safe driving record; required to obtain California license within 30 days.
Ability to regularly lift 30 pounds; occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds.
Must keep abreast of federal, state, and local regulations affecting operations, and must comply with these regulations as well as hazardous waste disposal and OSHA policies.
Ability to perform all essential functions of the job description.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least one National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in the eight automotive specialty areas (engine repair, engine performance, heating and air conditioning, electrical systems, automatic transmissions, manual transmission and axle, brakes, and front end).
Extensive knowledge of all aspects of vehicle repair and mechanical skills.
Excellent technical and customer service skills.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to read work orders and perform repairs in a timely fashion.
Ability to visually diagnose mechanical issues.
Proficient with computer diagnostic equipment and software.
Ability to read service and repair manuals.
Physical Demands:
Regularly stands, walks, sits; uses hands; reaches with hands and arms; talks and hears. Occasionally climbs or balances; bends, stretches, stoops, kneels, crouches, squats, or crawls to perform repairs and inspections; must lift up to 50 pounds.
Must be able to inspect vehicles to determine repairs needed.
Good vision to inspect repair work.
Must be able to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present.
