From $47,393 to $91,468*

*Salary Range depends on contraact negotiations. The 2024-2025 salary is listed for reference*

This position will be split between the 3 high schools.

Position Purpose:

The Cultural Specialist will provide educational planning, cultural advocacy, and guidance to develop curriculum for the standards regarding Indigenous education.

Responsibilities:

Supports the implementation of culturally responsive teaching practices in the classroom as required in Senate Bill 2304. Collects and records data to evaluate the implementation of Senate Bill 2304 requirements. Supports the use of the lesson plans in the North Dakota Native American Essential Understandings, working alongside the classroom teacher to implement NDNAEU lessons, with a focus on grades 4-5, 8 and 10. Provides cultural activities/programming after school (for example: ribbon skirts, teaching traditional ways, talking circles, beading). Provides cultural teachings in classrooms as requested. Assists the Indian Education Coordinator in planning main cultural programming events and works to increase visibility and district awareness of current events relevant to Native American issues, as requested. With the Indian Education Coordinator, provides educational planning, cultural advocacy, and guidance to professionals and student service offices, as needed, for circumstances involving Native American students. Assists Prek-12 grade teachers and students with Native American cultural workshops to create awareness of cultural identity and heritage. Assists and helps organize student organizations with a focus on Native American culture. Supports and nurtures a welcoming and culturally sound environment for Native American students in the Indian Education program and across the District. Collaborates with Indian Education and colleagues in developing comprehensive and integrated efforts to support Native American students. Utilizes data to proactively identify district curriculum needs in the area of Indigenous education & works with curriculum specialists to develop accurate content about Native American people and cultures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in education, social work, or related field required. ND Teaching License. Proficient knowledge of Native American culture, traditions, and ways of life. Knowledge of or experience meeting the unique educational and cultural needs of Native American students (awareness of Native American history, values, and contemporary issues in education). Needs to be a positive role model, able to live and work successfully in multicultural communities. Possess the skills pertinent to positive human relationships and the ability to work effectively with central office staff, principals, instructional staff, students, parents, and the community. Ability and patience to work with students and parents. Demonstrate proficiency in the ability to take initiative and work independently. Excellent organizational skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality. Knowledge of FPS's mission, purpose, goals and the role of every employee in achieving each of them.

Preferred Qualifications:

Language proficiency in a Native American or Native Alaskan dialect. Program development, implementation and evaluation experience.
