Agriculture Park Maintenance Specialist (SR-22)

Permanent Full-Time Plans and coordinates the activities of the agriculture park grounds, buildings, and related structures; oversees the care, maintenance, repair activities of the agriculture park grounds; and performs other related duties as required. Description
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the agricultural maintenance program and activities to include the care, maintenance, and repair of agriculture park grounds, buildings and related structures. Examples of Duties
Plans and makes work assignments for the care, maintenance and repair of agriculture park grounds, buildings, equipment, and related structures. Conducts periodic inspections of agriculture park grounds and facilities for necessary repairs and set priorities as appropriate. Initiates and enforces all safety rules and regulations. Makes cost estimates of maintenance and repair work. Prepares and maintains records of all work activities. Coordinates with other departments and community resources to oversee the maintenance and repair of waterlines, sprinkler systems, electrical, plumbing, painting, and carpentry work. Works with the community and the general public on projects and special events. Determines and recommends to the Director/Deputy Director on the use of insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and turf management. Reviews the work of contracted repairs and projects. Maintains effective relations with the general public, community groups, farmers, and agriculture organizations. Works closely with Risk Management to administer and implement the occupational health and safety policies and procedures. Installs and maintains appropriate security equipment, signage, and security gates. Solicits price quotes and prepares requisitions for materials, equipment and supplies. Reviews and prepares personnel reports and evaluations. Attends staff and community meetings. Travels to Molokai and Lanai as needed. Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in horticulture, landscape architecture, agriculture, sustainability horticulture or a related field and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of agriculture, horticulture or landscape architecture or chemical treatment, as applied to the care, maintenance and upkeep of agriculture parks or agricultural landscape areas. License Requirements: Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3). Knowledge of: the principles and practices of agriculture; propagation and cultivation methods and techniques; soil characteristics; methods and techniques of re-sodding and re-building large fields; basic principles of controlling plant pests and diseases; kinds of fertilizers and their uses; operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance equipment and tools; report writing; principles and practices of supervision. Ability to: plan and establish an agriculture grounds maintenance program; detect and recognize plant diseases and pests; recommend techniques and procedures in propagation, cultivation, chemical treatment, and general care and maintenance of plants, trees, fruits, vegetables; prepare cost estimates for material, equipment and supplies; research data and prepare reports; communicate clearly, orally and in writing; and foster good relationships.
