Bose Professional
Overview
Bose Professional is a leader in the professional audio industry, specializing in the design and manufacturing of cutting-edge audio solutions including loudspeakers, amplifiers, signal processing devices, controls, software, and accessories. Bose Professional is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team.
We organize around values that emphasize a team-first, customer-focused approach. We strive to be a company of trust, openness, directness, empathy, courtesy, and fairness, with a commitment to creativity and innovation to drive excellence in everything we do.
Position Overview The Mechanical Design Engineer plays a significant role in new product development and supporting existing products. The engineer will work with the mechanical team to create customer-focused product design solutions in a timely, cost-effective manner to meet or exceed product requirements and project targets. This role owns all activities for the mechanical engineering discipline on specific projects and supports other engineering functions (acoustic, electrical, operations, industrial design, marketing). The engineer will drive external teams (CM, tooling suppliers, and other tier 2 suppliers) to deliver a design that meets safety, quality, aesthetics, reliability, and customer expectations.
Engineering will require on-site development and evaluation, including in-lab testing, hands-on prototyping, collaboration, acoustic review and measurements. Availability for evening conference calls one to three nights per week is expected, depending on projects. There may be occasional travel to manufacturing sites to review issues, perform on-site debugging/evaluations, and collaborate with sub-suppliers to improve fabrication processes and part quality.
There will also be existing product support, including addressing quality issues on products in production, cost reductions, part shortages, manufacturing line moves, etc. The ability to manage engineering changes to designs or manufacturing processes through documentation is critical. In the longer term, the engineer will grow to work independently on complex projects and lead mechanical design on simpler projects, including managing accessory development, product variants, and continued improvement tasks.
Key Responsibilities
Product design and development of complex electro-mechanical assemblies for manufacturing through 3D CAD software
Significant plastic part design: designing for manufacturing highly cosmetic parts, structural enclosures, colors, outdoor environments
Finished metal part design: stamped sheet-metal, die casts, extrusions, machined parts for environmental conditions and highly aesthetic applications
Static/dynamic simulation of parts and assemblies to optimize designs for safety, structural integrity, and stiffness; thermal simulation capabilities are a plus
Documentation of product design, creating 3D/2D drawings, BOM management
Acoustic product evaluation and review of products including debugging buzzes, air leaks, transducer issues, port designs
Creating test plans to evaluate product requirements and customer experience, testing safety, installation, functionality, and customer interface features; tolerance analysis and test reports
Part cosmetic specification creation, reviews, and approvals including color approvals and design for industrial design requirements
Debugging issues found in validation or certification testing through root cause analysis
Providing input on issues that impact schedule, project cost, product cost, or risk from a technical perspective
Collaborating with Acoustic Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Project Managers, Marketing, and Product teams to deliver mechanical inputs and documentation
Working with contract manufacturers to deliver products within plan; coordinate early supplier involvement in highly technical/new products to optimize quality and meet requirements
Optimize product design for cost, ease of manufacturability, and quality
Develop plans to recover from issues that have arisen and manage risks realized
Continuously work with internal manufacturing, engineering, quality, and program management to improve cost, delivery, quality, and lead time for existing products
Communicate issues, risks, and concerns to management
Manage priorities and work on multiple products simultaneously
Support company objectives by completing additional tasks as needed
Qualifications
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience
5-10 years of mechanical development engineering experience, preferably in product development for consumer electronics or audio products
Minimum 5 years of experience with 3D CAD tools, preferably SolidWorks
Experience with product data management tools such as Windchill, including pulling P/Ns, building BOMs, and reviewing/managing 2D/3D documentation
Hands-on experience building prototypes using tools such as hand tools, woodshop tools, 3D printing, machining, and fabrication
Experience working with cross-functional teams including engineering, industrial design, product/marketing, and project management
Experience designing for manufacturing (DFM) and direct work with plastic injection molders, sheet metal suppliers, and contract manufacturers
Experience following a typical product development process, including understanding schedules, managing costs, and negotiating costs
Familiar with designing for customer experience, product reliability, certification, validation, and engineering requirements
Ability to travel occasionally to factories in China, Asia, or Europe as required
Outgoing, independent, hardworking, and able to work under pressure
Ability to address challenges using data and deliver results using sound analytics
Ability to foster a team-based environment and maintain cooperative relationships with individuals
Ability to engage in meetings with cross-functional teams and drive appropriate actions
Lifelong learner and open-minded
Self-motivated and highly independent worker
Bose Professional is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity in the workplace. We encourage all qualified individuals to apply.
