Position Overview The University of Alabama J. Frank Barefield Jr. College of Arts and Sciences School of Music seeks an innovative and dynamic tenure-track faculty member in choral music education with proven achievement as a choral educator and a demonstrated record of successful research. The ideal candidate has expertise in teaching, mentoring, and inspiring current and future choral educators and singers. A demonstrated commitment to the role of highly trained conductor- educators in the 21st century should be an active part of the candidate’s background and experience. Candidates should show ability and desire to empower, advocate for, and value a broad range of students as shown through pedagogy, mentoring, and related activities.

There will be a preliminary Zoom screening of selected applicants, after which selected candidates will be informed about in-person interviews.

Minimum Qualifications

A PhD in Music Education is required (ABD will be considered with degree conferral in hand by August 15, 2026)

A strong record as an effective choral educator with at least three years of full-time teaching experience in the secondary (middle/high school) choral classroom

Demonstrated achievement in scholarly/creative activities, with a defined record of successful research productivity

Preferred Qualifications

Experience recruiting students

A record of developing and maintaining vibrant connections with K-12 educators

Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate- and graduate-level choral methods and music education courses

Conduct a choral ensemble

Supervise choral student interns

Actively recruit for the undergraduate and graduate choral music education degree programs

Work closely with the music education and choral faculty

Maintain an active scholarly profile

Advise students and direct student research

Serve on department and college-level committees

Continue the development of a national and international reputation as a consummate choral conductor-educator and pedagogue, consistent with the expectations of a comprehensive School of Music at a major research institution
