Overview

Postdoctoral Research Associate for Observationally Focused Studies in Tropical Pacific Air-Sea Interaction. The Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO) at the University of Washington (UW) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for studies of Tropical Pacific air-sea interaction using data from Saildrone missions, the Tropical Pacific Observing System (TPOS), and potentially outputs of high-resolution Coupled Models. Saildrone are wind- and solar-powered Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) that are equipped with sensor systems to monitor air-sea heat, momentum and CO2 fluxes, surface properties and upper ocean currents. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will contribute to the international TPOS-2020 project, demonstrating how these USVs could add new capabilities to the current generation TPOS, for example by offering unique measurements of air-sea interaction across fronts in the ocean and atmosphere in near-realtime. For more information on the project, see NOAA PMEL’s Ocean Climate Station Saildrone webpage: https://www.pmel.noaa.gov/ocs/saildrone. This is a recruitment for one 12-month, full-time (100% FTE) appointment, renewable for a second year, subject to approval, satisfactory performance, and availability of funding. The workplace is NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, a federal laboratory located about 3 miles from the UW. For this reason, only U.S. citizens or permanent residents will be considered. Applicants must provide proof of the PhD conferral prior to start. A late 2018/ early 2019 start date is anticipated. Qualifications

PhD in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, or related fields. Two or more years’ experience using and analyzing datasets from ocean observations and/or advanced ocean-atmosphere models. Strong computer programming and diagnostic skills in analyzing large data sets. Note: This posting includes information on employer, application requirements, and related opportunities as published.
