Overview
Tulane University Law School seeks to hire full or part time Visiting Clinical Assistant Professors in at least 2 of its seven clinical programs, including in the Domestic Violence Clinic, the Women’s Prison Project, the First Amendment Clinic, and/or the Environmental Law Clinic. Run by full-time faculty, the law school’s clinical programs are among the most robust experiential learning programs in the nation for law students and exemplify the University’s strong culture of public service. Tulane’s clinics provide a capstone learning experience for law students, while modeling the legal profession’s core values and responsibilities to serve people of limited means. Through these programs, Tulane law students learn essential lawyering skills and provide free, exemplary legal representation to clients under Louisiana’s student practice rule. Students enroll for a full academic year. Clinic faculty engage in hands on, intensive supervision of complex litigation requiring subject matter expertise in areas such as: gender-based violence and family law; civil litigation; criminal law and practice; criminal defense and/or post-conviction practice (DV Clinic and WPP); First Amendment law, federal trial practice (First Amendment Clinic); environmental law, administrative law (Environmental Law Clinic); and more. Responsibilities
Directly represent clinic clients; Supervise student attorneys engaged in direct representation of clients; Work with the respective clinic director to advance the Clinic’s goals, identify docket priorities, screen and select cases, and manage student attorney workflow; Meet regularly with student attorneys, individually and in teams, to assist their case planning, provide feedback, and support their development of lawyering skills and professional identity formation; Perform other responsibilities as determined by the respective clinic director. Most appointments will be made for a 1-year period aligning with the 2025-26 academic year but may vary by candidate and clinic. A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school Three years of relevant experience Strong academic credentials Current ability to practice law in Louisiana, through active membership and good standing in the Louisiana bar and, in some cases, admission to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and trial courts within it Ability to collaborate with and be supervised by the Clinic Director Ability to produce written work of high quality and manage caseloads Ability to serve as an effective model for law students with respect to ethics, writing skills, oral advocacy, and commitment to excellence Ability to work effectively with students, clients, and community members of various backgrounds Additional Information This position is a non-tenure track, time limited faculty appointment as a Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date is between May and August 2025 and may be modified as earlier or later for a particular candidate or clinical program. The expected annual salary range for this position is $80,000-$90,000, depending on experience, and the salary will be accompanied by a range of employee benefits and professional development opportunities provided by the University.
